All,

You may have seen an announcement of a Firefox plugin I implemented in
my library (http://catalogingmatters.blogspot.com/2010/05/re-
experiment-with-extend-search.html). I've attempted to use it with the
Cooperative Cataloging Rules as well.

Instructions are at http://sites.google.com/site/opencatalogingrules/hyperwords-plugin
and it seems to be pretty simple. Essentially what I have done is to
make it simpler to search related information on rules that may be
found in the Cataloging Service Bulletins, Autocat, Google Books, and
on the regular web. Relatively little is available at the moment in
Google Books, but when their agreement with the publishers goes
through, there will be a lot more.

I should probably mention that you can also set a search box in your
Firefox browser, so that you can enter your own terms as well.

Let me know what you think, and if you have any ideas, let me know. I
realize the page is rather ugly, the searches can be tweaked, and so
on, but this is just the beginning.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for posting this! I've just downloaded the plugin and played with it a little. Is there a way to add a search for the following:
**OCLC's Bibliographic Formats and Standards Guide (http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/default.shtm)
**MARC Standards (http://www.loc.gov/marc/)

I could see using this along with Kyle Banerjee's Cataloging Calculator (http://calculate.alptown.com/).

I'll email you with more thoughts as they come up. Thanks again!

Thanks,
Becky

Hi Becky,

Sure. What I did though, in the upper-right corner was to place a link
that opens a box that goes into cataloging tools. I am adding the OCLC
guides now.

Do you (and others) think people need to search these by keyword?
Maybe it would be a good idea to make a separate page that would
search only formats, as opposed to rules!

Thanks for your comments!

Jim

Hi Jim,

Ah! Didn't catch that link! Usually placing links in the upper-right hand corner makes it invisible to users, since that is where ads usually live on web pages.

Searching formats would be a great addition. :c)

Thanks again,
Becky

Hi Becky,

I just made a new page for it. ?Again, all very preliminary. Just
reload the new Hyperwords file and you'll see a choice for Formats.
