One problem I have had with pi is no via.

What problem are you trying to solve, or rather what are you using the Pi for in this instance?

I have a shortage of monitors that take HDMI -- just got the one TV here that takes HDMI, so if I want to experiment with these things the HDMI -> VGA is useful.

Plus, there are others with the same problem.

Do you find that you get better performance from using the Raspberry Pi solution vs. just buying an HMDI to VGA adapter?

Not exactly sure how you'd measure that though.

I haven't actually used either.

From what I can gather commercial HDMI to VGA adaptors fall into two types: 

* simple leads, probably using the Gert's resistor approach, picture quality a bit patchy, but cheap(ish)
* converter boxes, good picture quality but expensive.

For my case, I just want something to connect one of these to an old flatscreen so I can get it up and running without having to use the TV.
