Hey OAC,

Our next Open Auto Club meeting will be on Thursday Dec 19 at 9am Pacific / 12pm Eastern / 14h ART / 17h UK time. Sofia Sanchez will present us with a plea to automate plant tissue culture, and share her ideas for how to approach it. Read all about Sofia's take on this in her blog post Please Build Robots To Automate Plant Tissue Culture.

I'm excited for this talk because I think we, as automation practitioners, often focus on how we should automate things, and fail to ask what is a good thing to automate at all. Sofia has some ideas!

You'll also get a calendar invite.

Finally, another huge thanks to Andy Quitmeyer for presenting on Mothbox last month. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/K03PHLYvs2c

Tim

I'm looking forward to our discussion next week! I'm afraid I've been totally slammed and dropped the ball on mentioning an idea that relates closely to this month's topic.

Sebastien Cocioba is a super smart plant guy that has been involved in community biology circles for many years. He is the grant officer for an opportunity on experiment.com right now: https://experiment.com/programs/plants?fbclid=IwY2xjawG7ViRleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHal7PYoLBAWqeyP5wvtI2FvTodOQ-yy3YDjD8EwFx5LfKEmFHO01T86kmA_aem_wBalbeDnD1Y7yaP1WwF3qA

The rough idea was to see if we could think of a piece of lab automation equipment that we could pitch to develop together under this opportunity.

If folks have any fun ideas please throw them out here! The deadline for submissions is Christmas Day, so we'll only have a week or so after our meeting to pitch something.

Thanks!

Derek

I'm interested!

A couple colleagues and I from Buenos Aires were thinking on the same lines. I'll try to get them to join the call too. :)

Perhaps making a tool for automated manipulation or phenotyping of plants, other than duck-weed of course which is jubilee's turf.

Best!
Nico

Myself and a couple folks at my space are doing some fun smart camera/AI vision things lately. I'll see if I can get Vince on the call. That seems important for automated phenotyping.

Jubilee claims no turf! Duckweed for all! Replication of hardware!
The way the call is written, it seems like if anyone actually did want to build a Duckbot https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0296717 and maybe extend it with some new hardware or software things, that would be welcomed. We're not going to submit anything but are happy to support anyone who wants to do jubilee duckweed stuff if that's helpful

Great! Yes the overall idea over here is to make an improved camera tool to scan A. thaliana plants, and measure something interesting.

Also, in doing so, I want to pave the way for open-hardware grippers (which Jenny was looking for too), tube decappers, and whatever requires rotational motion in addition to XYZ.

Jubilee claims no turf!

Yess :) I meant to make a plant joke (in the grass sense of turf) and bring up the duckbot works. 🦆

Looking forward to Thursday!
