I was thinking about coding up a package for PFSense, as it's got a PHP front end, and might be really easy to get going, any thoughts? I know that it's not the best thing to have your access control on the firewall, but this might be an easy win for smaller enviroments, and you could easily include user backup this in the xml backup file...

Thoughts?

I've coded up some stuff in ruby you might be able to look at... should be up on my github under Zyphlar. Open access control web interface I believe.

Will,

I checked out your Ruby code. Nice work, and I'm surprised at how
simple it is with the serial library.

David: I think that alarm monitoring on the pfsense box would be an
easy instant win. I'm guessing that some of the dedicated pfsense
boards have USB and other external interfaces to hook up.

For full access control, I think it can work safely, but the
conservative approach would be to have a dedicated firewall still.
I'd say go for it, and post the results. That's what open source is
about, eh?

It would be a sweet to have an all-in-one monitoring/internet/access
appliance for a home, cabin, computer room, etc.

I could also roll out a dedicated 14-zone alarm and temperature
monitoring shield as another option. Is anyone interested in that?

That would be epic, our thermostat blows and we could use a replacement and/or multi zone temperature logging. A pin for "compressor/fan on" would also help us estimate energy cost more accurately.

I'd like to get ethernet working though so everything doesn't have to be kludged with serial. For example my ruby code does everything twice and still has to be run twice sometimes to work.
