Canidate running for multiple positions

Hi,

So let's say candidate A is running for President and Vice President. 

They obviously want to be President. Is there a way to eliminate them from Vice President, and transfer their votes automatically on that line if they win both positions?

Michael,

I've encountered the same challenge and the only solution I've found is to run the vote in non-anonymous mode, set the Vice President vote as Ranked-choice, then execute the analysis manually eliminating the President candidate as the first step.

I do agree it would be nice if there was a way to tie these two contests together.  But, I suspect there might be some big assumptions such as the Candidate names between the two would need to match identically.  Maybe someone has found another, more creative way of doing this.

Gotcha, yea I was hoping I would be allowed to “create a candidate” and then simply assign that candidate to each contest. 

But none of the voting software I’ve looked at so far seems to have that capability. 

So I guess non-anonymous mode and doing the math myself is going to be the way to go…I was hoping to respect the privacy of the voters and obviously have this automated since I am paying for it…

Hi Michael,

There isn't a way to do this automatically in one election with OpaVote. You could use a Count to re-run the Vicepresident vote with this candidate "withdrawn", in the event that they do get elected to President (might depend on the methods you're using, you'd have to think about how "withdrawing" would affect the outcome; you can play with a free Count to test it out).

You could run a single STV election for both positions and make the first elected candidate president, and the second elected as vice president. The Boorda (approval) recount methods might help if you don't want the proportional representation effect.
