Technically, the painting ages after Dorian pledges his soul, so there is anelement of the supernatural in the story, an unspoken deal with the devil, theforces of darkness. Dorian becomes a hedonistic, evil individual and whenyou see the portrait, and it is hideous, so is the man.

Sykes, Edith. "In The Picture of Dorian Gray, were the changes in the portrait real or imagined by Dorian?" edited by eNotes Editorial, 21 Apr. 2008, -dorian-gray/questions/picture-dorian-gray-were-changes-portrait-real-21991.

The textual evidence suggests that the portrait does indeed change. WhenDorian encounters Basil Hallward on a London street, they discussthe scandalous rumors that surround Dorian, and Basil asks if they aretrue. In reply, Dorian offers to show Basil "his soul" and takes him tothe room where his disfigured portrait is hidden. Basil'sreaction to the changed portrait enrages Dorian and drives him to murder theartist. Since someone else sees the portrait, we know that its transformationwas not solely in Dorian's mind.
