Здравейте,
На 5 януари 2026 г. (понеделник) от 14:15 ч. в аудитория 501 на ФМИ ще се проведе сбирка на Семинара по оптимизация.

Докладчик: Cheng-Han Pan, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, United States

Тема: Differentiable Monsters and Set of Monstrous Shift

Резюме: “Monsters! An outrage against common sense. An arrogant distraction, and of little use to the subject.” In this talk, we begin with a few historical remarks on the well-known Weierstrass monster and then breed a differentiable monster that is at once “rugged” and “smooth.” In particular, given a strictly increasing differentiable function f : R → R whose derivative vanishes on a dense subset of R, Ciesielski showed that there is at least a comeager amount of t ∈ R such that f(x) − f(x − t) is nowhere-monotone. Moreover, we show that the set of shifts for which the difference is nowhere monotone is not only comeager but also has full Lebesgue measure in R. Interestingly, we also provide a specific pair of strictly increasing differentiable functions φ, ψ: R → R such that φ(x)−ψ(x−t) is nowhere-monotone for every t ∈ R.

Dear Colleague,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am reaching out to inform you that Luis Carlos García Lirola (Zaragoza University) and I are organizing the Summer School "Topics in Banach Space Theory", scheduled to take place from July 6 to July 10, 2026, at CIEM in Castro UrdialesSpain.

The program will consist of a series of mini-courses and talks delivered by both junior and senior researchers, as well as free time aimed at fostering open discussions and collaboration among participants. The core minicourses will be given by:

  • Christina Brech (São Paulo University, Brazil): Combinatorics in nonseparable Banach spaces
  • Marek Cúth (Charles University, Czech Republic): Descriptive set theory in Banach spaces
  • María Japón (Seville University, Spain): Metric fixed point theory with applications.
  • Mikhail Ostrovskii (St. John's University, USA): Finite-dimensional transportation cost spaces
Given our limited budget, we would appreciate it if you could let us know whether you might be interested in attending the School. To do so, please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/fi2Wvq4LHLksNVUY8.

The School is supported by the Centro Internacional de Encuentros Matemáticos of the University of Cantabria, the European Mathematical Society, and the Instituto Universitario de Matemáticas y Aplicaciones and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Zaragoza.

Further information on the program, including the website for formal registration, will be made available at: https://banach26.unizar.es/.

Thank you for your attention.

Best regards,
Sheldon Gil Dantas and Luis C. García-Lirola
