Last December, Ookaboo outgrew our old hosting situation, so I
spent a lot of time over Christmas break moving Ookaboo and a number of
other sites over to Amazon Web Services. The issue wasn't so much
handling the traffic it gets (although that's been growing quickly) but
rather that back-end data loading tasks I was doing were interfering
with operations. AWS makes it easy to provision additional computers to
run these back-end tasks so that they don't interfere with the everyday
operation of the site.
Along the way I made some performance improvements and expect to
be able to complete another round of performance improvements soon.
Image loading has just been resumed, and Ookaboo noew contains about
100 million new facts that have not yet been exposed to end users.
I'm excited about the improvements in browsing, searching, and
other aspects of the site that will be happening in the next few
months. I'm interested in any feedback about things that may not be
working after the move and changes that could help you use the site,
RDF data, or API.
