hello onxyvj,

long time reader and first time poster- so thanks for all the
hardwork.

hunting down anyone that might know a thing or two about multiple
video display synchronization, video-wall techniques. i'm looking to
power a dual pci express system- probably running win ati graphics
driverz. i have had a little luck running flgrx in ubuntu 8.10 but i
mostly have a trashed x11 .rc file with single display output. my mac
osx gear consists of a macbook, so one output. i can use multiple unix
boxz to send vga signal to the three projectos needing synchronous
video feeds. so i just rip & crop the thing apart with ffmpeg and i
have a long, feature length like video that plays while i make noise.
yes nifty.

so that leaves me with a windows vista (or windows 7, i guess)
installation that runs .flv files much better than the macbook. i'm so
allured by onyx to feed these three projections in one or two ways:
route the single, composite main mix across three projectors either
vertically or horizontally OR from some combination of the 5 cue
decks. the later i imagine to be more complicated and less likely..
using vlc over local ethernet is good for one long video- not short
clips because the video window you stretched across all your output
displays gets re-sized/reset to whatevervideoclip's native video
dimension on load/start/play. blahrg.

the projectors will all be the same resolution, 800x600 most likely.
i've been composting very large frame video (800x1600 for example)
that is easily stretched across, via the windows gui and graphics card
settings, the width of the desktop, or screen. 4 unique displays-
three projectos and an lcd to monitor/see onyx.

yes, well you get the idea, please respond if this interests you.

edward,

i had just this challenge last weekend.

my setup:
dual core pentium
4gb Ram
ubuntu 10.4
nvidia version current
1 triplehead2go
2 projectors (1024x768 / 800x600)

1) turn on the projectors
2) make sure that the projectors are set to the same input resolution
and attach them to the triple head
3) power-up the triplehead2go
4) attach triple-head2go to monitor output of the computer
5) open nvidia server settings
6) detect new output devices
7) select triplehead2go
a) resolution: 1600x600 (or a similar scale)
b) make sure that your laptop monitor is selected as primary
c) set the triple head to be left of the monitor and move it so that
there is a
little gap between the windows (don't know why it works, but it does)
8) open your settings.xml file in your Onyx folder and use this under <core>
<render>
<bitmapData>
<width>1600</width>
<height>600</height>
</bitmapData>
</render>
9) start onyx, watch the projectors and tweak the nvidia resolution
and <bitmapData>. (restarting onyx each time...)
10) cringe at the fact that onyx is not able to render your sets at
anything close to 15fps and simply assumes that your output is going
to be some scale of 640x480...
11) have an 1600x800 .mov prepared that can run for 2 hours and make
everyone think you're doing important stuff.

* caveat: I failed because the event organizers did not tell me that
they were using two video projectors with different resolutions and i
was not able to change the size of the projector with 1024x768 to
800x600. and onyx was breathtakingly slow to the point where i just
wanted to shoot myself. of course my friends using macintosh had no
problems whatsoever...

regards,
