realized here would be more appropriate **

Hey there,

Just trying out ONYX, and I like what I’m seeing, but I’ve got a few
problems.

I’m attempting to install on a netbook (I know…) - an Acer Aspire One
with the ram maxxed at 2 gig - running Windows 7 Starter. I first
tried an older version - 3.1, still on your site - and it was not
displaying properly. The app loaded full screen, and was cut off at
the bottom. The Aspire has a 1024×600 screen, so that might have
something to do with it.

I next tried the most recent version after I finally looked at your
blog, and it seems to display okay, but hangs on first run, when it
hits ‘LOADING SETTINGS’. Shutting it down and running again, it hangs
at ‘INITIALIZING PLUGINS’ on the first plugin (socket MIDI module).

I’d love to find a version that works. It seems to have all the
features I need and I love the interface. Anything you can suggest?

Hi Scott,

We are currently working on a new version, but you can find Onyx-VJ
4.2.1 AIR file link on http://www.batchass.fr/code/onyxvj.html

Onyx-VJ should run with a height of 700 px minimum resolution.

Please share the log files in %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Onyx-VJ
\Local Store

Thanks
Bruce

Thanks Bruce,

The only thing I've got in that directory is:

folders.ini
which contains:

C:\Users\Scott\Documents\Onyx\Onyx-VJ

There was no change from the first run and subsequent runs.

As for the screen size, is there any way to make the screen scrollable
if the height resolution is under 700?

I'm using this netbook as a primary system for the summer and have a
couple of gigs I'd like to try this out for. I may get a bigger laptop
in the fall, so at that point this might be a non-issue. That being
said, I've run ArKaos on this thing without too much trouble, and I do
like the option of bringing a smaller rig, so it would be great if
this would work.

Thanks for taking the time to help,

Scott

Scott,

I added a scale mode for the display, which can look strange, but...
please try this beta on your netbook:

http://www.Batchass.fr/onyx-vj/update/OnyxVJ4.3.0.air

and let me know
Thanks

Hey Bruce, thanks for sending this. I got it to load okay, and work, although the text was unreadable at that size. It might be easier to use scroll bars at the bottom and side to get around, but I appreciate the effort on this.

In the process I actually discovered larger problems, though, some or all of which may or may not be worth addressing.

I got it to load fully when in the process of uninstalling and reinstalling I found an older version of the log file, which I hadn't  seen previously. It looks like it was failing because I hadn't attached an external monitor. I tried doing that, and it loaded properly.

The bigger issue for me is that I hadn't really paid attention to how the netbook handles multiple monitors. It can only do it at extremely low resolution, for both monitors, and only as duplicate screens. I hadn't noticed this because I'd only used it for a few hastily arranged bar gigs, running ArKaos in duplicate monitor mode.

Given that your assumed use case for Onyx is actual dual monitor and at higher resolution, this basically won't work.

I might be able to solve this by going out and getting a USB external video card, which actually would be useful in the long run, but as for just carting the netbook around it's a non starter.

I may do the USB thing this week or next, and then try again with what you've got, and I'd certainly be willing to test the UI insofar as getting it to work on a netbook monitor whether or not it's useful to me at gigs, such as finding a way to make it legible at smaller monitor sizes. It's quite a promising system.

Thanks for your help so far with this. I hope I haven't wasted your time.

Scott
