Mapping Automation

Dear OnTop Group,

Firstly, I'd like to start by saying that I am very new to the whole OnTop idea and project. So I apologize if I am asking something not correct.

I have gone through the tutorial, and have done the mappings of the databases to the ontology manually like instructed in the tutorial. I was wondering, is there a way to automate this process? Going manually one by one in each database column seems not very efficient.

Let me know if I am missing something.

Hi Vijon,

Ontop offers one solution for bootstrapping the mapping: https://ontop-vkg.org/guide/cli.html#ontop-bootstrap

The result is fairly straightforward and usually looks very different from a manually-designed mapping.

We plan to bring into Ontop a better bootstrapper next year offering parameters to guide the mapping generation process.

Mapping bootstrapping is actually an active research area and we expect more solutions to appear in the coming years.

Regarding mapping by hand, one thing to keep in mind is that you usually don't need to map everything. 

Focusing on the use case and mapping only what is needed to address it often works fine.
