PartitionMagic[1][2] is a utility software program for hard disk drive partitioning originally made by PowerQuest, but subsequently owned by Symantec. As of December 8, 2009, the Symantec website stated that they no longer offer PartitionMagic.
The program runs on pre-Vista Microsoft Windows operating systems including Windows 2000 and Windows XP, but the application is incompatible with Windows Vista and later versions (although Microsoft added resizing). In any of these cases, existing partitions can be resized without loss of data.
PartitionMagic is capable of resizing NTFS, FAT16 or FAT32 partitions without data loss, and can copy and move partitions, including to other disks. It also has various other features, including being able to convert between FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS, modify the cluster size of FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS filesystems, and merge adjacent FAT or NTFS filesystems (all without data loss, though some NTFS-only metadata is lost on conversion to FAT). Additionally, it had somewhat limited support for ext2 and ext3 partitions. PartitionMagic was the first commercial product of its kind containing patented technology.[3]
The stable version of PartitionMagic 8.05 also included a rescue floppy disk with an additional DOS version of PartitionMagic. The DOS version (which included DR-DOS or MS-DOS) came on one 2.88 MB or two 1.44 MB floppy disks.[4][5]
The Windows version of PartitionMagic could also be integrated in BartPE (Bart's Preinstalled Environment) a Windows XP based Live CD created by using the PE Builder. To integrate PartitionMagic into BartPE a PE Builder plug-in for PartitionMagic was available.[6][user-generated source]
Once Symantec purchased the application in 2003,[11] there were no new releases, and Symantec stated that it had no plans on releasing a new version. As of October 13, 2011, the Symantec website stated, "Sorry, we no longer offer Norton Partition Magic."
Whenever I partition my HDD I am using Windows Partition Magic... one of the reasons I am still holding Win'98 on my machine. On Win-Lin-Soft website I found QTParted; a Partition Magic clone. AL has the concole version Parted. I am interested in GUI.
It seems to work except cannot resize or move ext3 and reiserfs partitions. Fat and ext2 is ok though I have not yet "dared" to try . I am planning to buy a new HDD, then I do the test. Mean while I will try to get the "resize" and "move" option visible. If this work, then files generated by rpm can be compiled to an AL package.
I did the test resizng FAT32, create Ext2 and resize, convert to Ext3 and Reiserfs (jfs). Everything works as its suppose to do, its good. I am adding it to AL-AMLUG Live CD 0.3 to partition Hard Disk before copying CD to HD.

I too remember using Partition Magic in the past ... I've moved to Minitool PartitionWizard (free edition) now. Had to use it last night to shuffle free space in all the "hidden" partitions on my laptop last night to get 250MB free space in the recovery partition so that the latest Windows update doesn't crash (and before anyone starts sounding off on MS/Windows/etc in the past I've had something similar on Ubuntu Linux were an auto update ran out of disk space, fell over, and left that partiton still full so all further updates crashed a well)
I always tend to find some of the rough edges, though, including an inability to cope with disks in a system using an early SATA controller that sets up disks as a stripe with one disk in it. Windows is fine with it, but some partition tools throw a wobbler.
You can easily set a ZFS parameter to set it's maximum RAM consumption - on my home NAS/hypervisor I have it set to 50% of the 128G installed and on my backups server it's set to 80% of the 32G installed (IIRC)
As for the cache situation, for ZFS on Linux it can't use the system cache because it's licensed differently from the kernel (ZFS uses a CDDL license instead of GPL so the kernel devs won't let it in to the cache). Also the way the cache operates is very different from the system cache so it's best to keep them separate. ZFS will quickly relinquish cache though if the OS requests it to reduce RAM usage (at the expense of performance) so it shouldn't pose a massive problem.
I don't think Oracle has a ZFS implementation that can run on Linux. Oracle inherited Solaris when it purchased SUN Microsystems and that came with a fairly old version of ZFS. That version of ZFS was ancient by today's standards and only ran on Unix. Oracle has done some work on their own ZFS implementation but relatively little compared to a number of other players in this space (such as Delphix and Nexenta Systems for instance). Rumour has it that the entire division that used to work on Oracle ZFS was closed a few years ago.
