On June 3, Arun Majumdar and I will present a talk for the Ontology Summit about our Permion company and the technology that combines symbolic AI with LLMs for natural language analysis, generation, and translation to other languages, natural and artificial.

The Chinese company Deep Seek has been doing something similar, and they are causing panic among the Big Guys with their multibillion $$$ systems.  Our Permion company has competed succesfully against the Big Guys on various contracts.   And now, an article in the MIT Technology Review says that Deep Seek is causing panic among the Big Guys.  It turns out that Deep Seek is giving away their software as free open source.

Good News for Planet Earth:  The huge monstrosities with billions of  $$$ of Nvidia chips, monstrous demands on electricity, and monstrous waste of water for cooling have suddenly become obsolete -- or at least obsolescent.

Some excerpts:

When the Chinese firm DeepSeek dropped a large language model called R1 last week, it sent shock waves through the US tech industry. Not only did R1 match the best of the homegrown competition, it was built for a fraction of the cost—and given away for free.

The US stock market lost $1 trillion, President Trump called it a wake-up call, and the hype was dialed up yet again. “DeepSeek R1 is one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs I’ve ever seen—and as open source, a profound gift to the world,” Silicon Valley’s kingpin investor Marc Andreessen posted on X.

But DeepSeek’s innovations are not the only takeaway here. By publishing details about how R1 and a previous model called V3 were built and releasing the models for free, DeepSeek has pulled back the curtain to reveal that reasoning models are a lot easier to build than people thought. The company has closed the lead on the world’s very top labs.

. . . Skipping many paragraphs to the end. ...

If building reasoning models is not as hard as people thought, we can expect a proliferation of free models that are far more capable than we’ve yet seen. With the know-how out in the open, Friedman thinks, there will be more collaboration between small companies, blunting the edge that the biggest companies have enjoyed. “I think this could be a monumental moment,” he says.

Dear and respected colleague,
The article referenced by our distinguished John Sowa is from January 2025. Many things have changed. Yes, I am excited to hear from Arun Majumdar and John Sowa, as I am excited by the innovations that I am experiencing with the LLM models.
Best wishes.

There is much more to say about all these issues.  And I strongly recommend the Wikipedia article for a summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeepSeek_(chatbot)

The Pernion system builds on a very successful symbolic foundation of the previous VivoMind company, and it uses other technology that is not exported to China.  But it's significant that Deep Seek can surpass the enormous LLM systems with symbolic methods for many important  applications.

The Permion systems also surpass the big monsters, and  they can use technology that is not exported to China.  They can combine the best of both worlds.  We'll discuss the issues in June.
