Hi all

I saw this thread on OCLC-CAT and wondered whether any of you are including content warnings generated by authors in your records.

See the thread below.

Subject: Public libraries transcribing "content warnings"-- thoughts??

Hello, colleagues!

My question is mainly directed at public librarians, but I'd love to hear from anyone! We're seeing more and more author-supplied content or trigger warnings in print books. Does your library transcribe these into the bibliographic record? Why or why not? What's your cataloging team's general guidelines or practice for this sort of thing?

A couple recent examples for us include:

"Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh and "Exodus 20:3" by Freydís Moon.

Subject: Re: Public libraries transcribing "content warnings"-- thoughts??

As we at the Worcester Public Library in MA have started seeing these, we have chosen to enter it in a 500 note. We feel it could be relevant to patrons as they search the catalog, especially those who may have experienced trauma and would not want to be exposed to anything that could trigger negative feelings. We feel this is similar to if it was a rating system that would go in a 521 (G, PG, R, T, T+ M, etc.); only to provide information for those who seek it. We are not doing it with the intent the items would be censored by anyone, only to give information as it is given/offered on the item itself.

I would be interested for an opposing viewpoint if anyone specifically does not enter this information.

Thanks,

Subject: Re: Public libraries transcribing "content warnings"-- thoughts??

The consortium I used to work at in SE PA left the decision to include these descriptions (or not) up to the library directors. Over the last couple of years, the area that we're in has experienced an uptick in book challenges and angry townspeople at town meetings (in which one director was berated and belittled), so the cataloguers felt that it was out of our depth to make that decision. The directors decided that we should not include those warnings anywhere in the bib record so as not to provide more fodder for those people who are looking for reasons to challenge books in their local public library. Not that they can't find the book on the library shelves, of course, but hopefully not having that information keyword searchable (as 500s are in our catalogue) makes it more difficult for people to find books to protest.

*Raises hand* Academic library here.

I haven't yet encountered these statements in print books but come across similar remarks in my DVD cataloging often enough. I quote the statements in a 520 field<https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/5xx/520.html>, 1st indicator "4" (Content advice). I'd do the same if or when these show up in our print books.
