Hi everyone,
The County of Brant Library is considering re-labelling our non-fiction books so that the labels all meet the same standard.
Currently our labels which have the same number could look like this:
947
.962
35447
321
Bre
or
947
.9623
5447
321
Joh
or
947
.9623
544
7321
Med
or
947
.96235
447321
Sce
As you can imagine, this makes shelf reading the longer numbers a nightmare.
The standard we are considering uses a maximum of 4 numbers per line for the second and third line. The number in the example above would always look like this:
947
.9623
5447
321
If the number is more than, 12 digits long, the extra digits would be added to the fourth line.
We are also considering moving the decimal point so that it is on the first line, so the number would end up looking like this:
947.
9623
5447
321
We would appreciate any feedback on pros and cons of this plan. Do you have some experience you could share? Are there any important rules that are being grievously broken by doing this? Is anyone already putting the decimal point on the first line of their labels? Do you have any suggestions that could improve upon this plan?
Any feedback you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael
