Code of Ethics for Cataloguers: Consulting the Canadian Cataloguing Community

Session description

CFLA Cataloguing and Metadata Standards Committee (CFLA CMSC) invites you to discuss the new Cataloguing Code of Ethics released in January 2021. The Committee would like feedback from the Library community so it can consider recommending that the CFLA-FCAB Board of Directors officially endorse the Code. The Cataloguing Code of Ethics has already been endorsed by the American Library Association Core Board of Directors and the Board of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) in the United Kingdom.

The Cataloguing Code of Ethics is a useful tool to enhance cataloguing practice by raising awareness of ethical issues in the creation of metadata records and addressing systematic barriers to inclusion which have traditionally been present in library catalogues. The Code provides a decision-making framework to guide the process of cataloguing, metadata creation as well as retrospective projects.

We welcome you to this session to learn more about the Cataloguing Code of Ethics, ask questions, find out how the Code is already being used and participate in this national consultation process.

It is recommended that participants read the Code of Ethics for Cataloguers before attending this session, available at https://sites.google.com/view/cataloging-ethics/home

Emma Cross, Cataloguing and Metadata Librarian, Carleton University Library
