Wait A sec...personals are not allowed?
I dont do it myself, but I respect the rights of other people. I have
never seen any message from my ISP, not to post a personal on
Ont.Singles. THIS IS A FREE COUNTRY!

Applause people, the performance is over!
Personals are not welcome in the *.singles grousps. Please do not post
personals here. IF you continue to do so, your ISP will be notified about
your breach of netiquette.
This is merely a warning.

It is part of the unofficial charter of ont.singles (analogous to
soc.singles) that there be no personals posted here. There are personals
newsgroups where you can post personals. This newsgroup is for other stuff.
Your ISP does not have say over what is discussed in a newsgroup. The
people who read and post in the newsgroup do.
Suggest you do a Web search on "Netiquette"... I'm sure you'll turn up
some information there. It is considered rude to post whatever you like,
wherever you like, without consideration for newsgroup communities.

and you are free to post your personals in the *.personals hiearchy and
respect the wishes of those who want *discussion* areas to REMAIN discussion
areas, and not meet markets.

then why have different newsgroups! let's just have *one* BIG, HUGE newsgroup
all the time where everyone talks about *everything* and you have to sort
out who you want to talk to and what you want to talk about.
get the concept, berk?

Well then, couldnt one just say... respect the wishes of those who also
want to post a personal ad? You can do both, post personal ads and
discussion. All you have to do is skip the personal ads. As for the
clutter? Its mostly the fault of people who dont like personal adds
from posting all those "go away" messages that clog up the site.
Further, its not like their is an abundance of discussion on here
anyway. The only half decent discussion was well, our little flame
war. The rest of the discussion has centered around nothing but
flaming, spamming and congratulating your friends on some good flaming
or spamming. Its pathetic actually.
What exactly our we supposed to be discussing anyways?

oh really angie??? you seemed to somehow find out that you wanted to
respond to my postings?? given the response and the response to the guy

typical of the average. But you still managed to find it?
I'll make this easy for you. Look at the subject..if it says something

discussion. This isnt a hard concept now is it?

i can get you the name and e-mail address of the people who maintain the
ont.* hierarchy and you can request one.
and what's wrong with specifying in the *.personals hierarchy that you
want someone in the Toronto, Canada area? *sheesh* berk, that's a basic!

no, berk. because then there's no reason to have a discussion group.

you call that *discussion*? *snork*

berk, berk, berk - this newsgroup is a DISCUSSION group!!!! not a MEET
MARKET! you're welcome to start your own group for whatever purposes
you want - like talking about how *cute* you are.
but newsgroups have defined purposes, and *this* group's purpose is
DISCUSSION!!! it is NOT a place to post personal ads.

actually, they do. most sites on the net are trying to get past the bad
image they've acquired through spammers and businesses chasing after you
in your own private mailbox.
since i've been using this sig line, i get maybe one or two commercial
e-mails a week, instead of 3 or more per day. and the postmasters are
very polite and effective in getting the idiots to cease and desist.

Everyone whines and complains that the group is for discussion of singles
issues, yet nearly a third of the posts discuss the posting of personal
advertisements.
Like it or not, the internet and its newsgroups are changing and growing.
Try being helpful for a change. If someone offends you, e-mail them with
some friendly advice rather than post your diatribe about their
inappropriate behaviour.
I get this picture in my mind of people with no lives leaving their
nowhere jobs and hoping that someone has posted an ad so that they'll
have something to do in the evening by harrassing them.
Live and let live people. Help others out, don't embarass them publicly
and please try and concentrate on more important priorities in this
world!
Flame away if necessary. My mailer has this unique key called "delete".
If I see something I don't want to read, I delete it without reading. A
novel concept I know.

The obvious answer is that most people reading the personals hierarchy
(assuming they know there is one, as mentioned) will live in other
areas of the Globe. Thats an ineffective way to communicate.

now you are ducking the issue. People should just ignore those
advertisements.. than the companies would say "we are getting no
response...no one even reads them" By responidng, even negatively, you
are showing that people read those things, thus they continue.
>> Further, its not like their is an abundance of discussion on here

What was the last issue discussed on this thing? That did not
revolve around someone wanting something ..whether in the form of a
personal ad or a flame? You see, with me, I use newsgroups and the
internet genrally for one purpose only: for fun. I dont care what
anyone does..to each his own. People who care too much about
ont.singles , by posting messages telling everyone how "annoying they
are" are actually hurting the chance for discussion. People should
never be made to feel intimadated about speaking out on anything.
Whats the point of free discussion if its only to say things that you
agree with? Sounds like pretty boring conversation to me.

WHOA!!!! WAIT A SEC!!! Insults to all women?? no way! never! Thats
your version of what I said, not mine. You distorted my words to mean
things they werent supposed to. I have to admit that I distorted yours
too, but I was hoping you would get the message of how unfair this was,
and you would stop it.

Really? I think there are movie groups, food groups, life groups, etc.
they are easily obtainable. I have never seen anyone talk about
movies or food or first date jitters or anything like that. Maybe I
will start?
The movie Trainspotting was excellent. It featured almost exclusively
unknown actors, but those actors all gave outstanding performances. It
was far more shocking than any conventional hollywood movie. Its about
heroin addicts and their self destructive natures. However, it is very
disturbing and will offend some..
I also, saw the movie "she's the one". It was pretty unrealistic. One
brother was a new york taxi driver and the other wirked on wall street.
They both got married and basically its about how marriage can't work
because men are inclined to cheat. Both guys were really cute .. but I
can't say that or else SOMEONE might start to flame the movie industry.

WHOA!! went to town on me? I dont think so. I think it was the other
way around. Michel and MIchael's biggest insult was that I confused
their names. Not exactly making me cry myself to sleep at night. I
proved that meeting strangers at clubs is relatively safe by referring
to a feminist author didnt I? I got you so upset that you resorted to
calling me by my last name didnt I? I think I'm the one who is
laughing.

not just how cute I am :)

well, the main personals group gets hundreds of messages a day, so i'm sure
there are those who are not finding it ineffective.

i don't read *advertisements* - i.e. spam. those i send back to the
postmaster.
personal ads are another matter. you have to let the *poster* know that
they are not welcome.
> Whats the point of free discussion if its only to say things that you

who is saying you have to agree with anyone?
what we're saying is - THIS NEWSGROUP IS FOR DISCUSSION, please take your
personal ads to the appropriate place.
within *discussion* anything goes!
you seem to think some mysterious *we* is trying to curb your freedom of
speech.
*we're* not.
but, freedom of speech means i, or anyone else, can damn well disagree with
you and flame you all to hell if we feel like it because you write something
we think is stupid.
*you* seem to be the one who wants everyone to agree with you!
now, just for the record - there *is* a soc.personals, netcom should carry it
since it's part of a Big 8 hierarchy.
and i will get the name of the people who run the ont.*hierarchy just so all
you people who so desperately want to post ads in a discussion group can have
your little playground!
angie
In browsing the news on this group, I'd say there is very little being
posted of any significance. I'd much rather see personal ads than all
the other stuff. And, for those who don't want to see personal ads, then
they have a choice of not reading it. It's really very simple.

How nice of you, a newbie, to tell us what this newsgroup is for.
Can anyone point me in the direction of guidelines for ont.* ng creation?
We obviously do need an ont.personals. (Of course, idiots will crosspost
to it regardless of where they are, rendering it no different from
any other personals group... so speaketh the pessimist.)
There's always ont.personals.whips-and-rubber-chickens, or whatever it's
called. :)
And, since SCK has complained about people posting and without any
discussable content... how about the question of religious differences
between ourselves and friends and family? Talking on the 'Net tends to
bring me into contact with people in the States (not surprisingly) who are
more often members of strong/fundamentalist Christian denominations. I
definitely do not believe in the divine creation of the universe some few
thousand years ago... perhaps I need to learn a little more tolerance.
On another subject, even if I am going alone, I know that I have an
awesome time at concerts of either the Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo (in
Ottawa) or Big Rude Jake (who tour a bit from Toronto). Dance till your
shoes wear out!!!

this is what the *.personals groups are for!!!!
there is a Toronto personals group.

I sure Angie really meant to say "meat" markets
Nope. I'm pretty sure she got it right.
