Obama is as smart as he looks. In this latest little quiet agreement for trade between
the U.S. and Canada, he has allowed Canadian companies to bid on jobs that come under the
American 'stimulus program' category. Sounds pretty good, eh?
Well the other part of the story is that the vast majority of that 'stimulus money' has
already been spent - by American firms that bid on the stimulus jobs. Obama waited until
the money was already in American-firm hands, then announced Canada could partake of the
programs.

Ah, but there's another even better component to this story: AMERICAN FIRMS CAN NOW BID
ON CANADIAN STIMULUS PROJECTS - the vast majority of which has NOT been spent and put into
Canadian firms' hands.

How duped can Canada be - once again - by lack of competent leadership in Ottawa? -
otherwise known as the Stephen Harper Hiatus Government?

THE DEAL

"The agreement applies only to U.S. funding delivered under the current stimulus program,
not future legislation that might include 'Buy American'-type provisions. The U.S. money
is allocated for roads, public housing and other infrastructure projects, the drawback
being that most of the money has already been spent. .The Canadian government is arguing
the deal sets a precedent for future stimulus spending in the U.S. .In return, Canadian
provinces are to sign on to a World Trade Organization general procurement agreement,
which will give the U.S. and other countries access to projects underway in Canada with
federal stimulus spending."

The Toronto Star reports it as, "Sources said the agreement exempts Canadian firms from
the protectionist measures on contracts funded from what hasn't yet been spent from the
$787 billion fund. And Canadian firms get a broader exemption from Buy America in the 37
U.S. states that are parties to the World Trade Agreement rules on procurement. In
exchange, Canadian provincial and municipal governments will commit not to discriminate
against U.S. firms when handing out contracts in this country."

The Globe and Mail adds, "The agreement is to some extent symbolic, since many of the
contracts associated with the American economic stimulus program have already been let.
But the agreement sets several vitally important precedents." The newspaper had reported
on January 19 that, "As much as 40 per cent of the money from the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act has already been spent. By Feb. 17, what's left will be committed and on
its way out the door."

Ya, so, Obama has just gotten another $1.5 trillion to debt spend...

Sure beats what the liberals did to BC lumber. Chretien bad mouths the
USA on US public television pissing them off so congress can screw BC
with a smile, leaving a BC lumber trade issue courtesy of a jack ass
Chretien.

Sort of like BC's NEP if you will. Liberals screwing the west.

Gets better, the west is now larger than precious Quebec, been growing
as people move west to avoid central and eastern BS politics.

Want a majority? Better get a piece of the west - and liberals are not
liked out here. I will say this about Quebec, getting the Bloc was a
great idea, hope the west will follow.

Think, if the west were to be a Western Concept Alliance, and Quebec the
Bloc, then the Liberals, NDP and Conservative bickering ass holes could
never get a majority government. Which suits me fine as I don't trust
any of them.

I see no big issue with it. The USA is a massive market, Canadian
steel is a vital component of building infrastructure. Many Canadian
companies were concerned that they would have to start branch offices
in the USA to do business, and also have token manufacturing
facilities.

There will be fewer incidences of American companies taking jobs from
Canadian manufacturers because of the currency exchange still being
favourable, however we will be able to do proper business in the
USA.

Canada is a net exporter, the USA is a net importer. Our economies
were, during WW2, in lock step. And from the late 1940's to the
introduction of the FTA, it got to the point where tariffs in both
countries were inhibiting honest business.

They don't think they've won in the big "free trade" picture, and
they're right. Canada has. We rarely lose jobs to the USA these
days. It's Mexico.

Did you know that the US military installed a pile of water treatment
technology at a base, then ordered it torn up and replaced because it
was of Canadian origin? And that was just due to bad Intel? Some
fool in the US military thought that the "Buy American" idea was in
place. So they paid the Canadian company for the water purification
and pumping equipment, then ripped it out and bought American!

That's just fucking insane.

The Americans finally had to pay up and who jumped ship from being a
newly elected Liberal, over to the Conservative Party where he could
get a hand in the deal after Harper & Co won the election? None other
than David Emerson, BC MP, who just happened to once be the CEO of
Canfor. I guess he had a alot of stock and options and took a lowball
offer just to make sure he didn't go hungry. The softwood lumber
dispute was finally resolved by the Conservatives and they came up
with peanuts compared to what was owed.

Canada will never see another majority government while you're alive.
Party politics is dysfunctional, no one trusts their representative
after they voted for the HST. Politicians worldwide are garbage now.
There is a class war going on and democracy is a joke.

You think a name change will bring people with new names. So what?
They'll get schooled in how to get the perks and never want to leave
their power and authority. Its called politics with teams of players
who's mandate is to ascend to power and once there, schemme and
connive everyday to return to power. Once they're out - off into the
business world they go as leaders. Used to be that some of the NDP
members, before elected, would shower after work rather than before
work. Now they are all rosy smelling whores drowned in toilet water.

Nope. The stimulus money has been 95% spent. And you think the Americans are going to
give the remaining 5% to Canadian bidders? If you do, you need to believe you're gonna
win the next lottery.

Yeah, you never want to "piss off" the Americans. Never know what they may do. Might
have been a whole lot better if CONSERVATIVE PARTY PM Brian Mulroney had never put
Canada's neck into the 'Free Trade Agreement' in the first place, eh?

Sort of like a repeat of history in Canada: Conservative Party types ALWAYS screwing ALL
Canadians.

Grow a brain. "The West" in your mind is more than Alberta. In everyone else's mind it's
still only Alberta that is stamping its feet and hollerin' "Separate! Separate!
Separate!" The rest of Canada is smiling and saying 'How the hell did they go from
having the biggest surplus economy in Canada to a DEFICIT economy in less than a year?'

Comes from having too many brainless types like you in Alberta, I guess.

Funny, Obama just got $1.6 trillion more.

Agreed. But then if we piss them off how does 80% unemployed sound?

And our politicians (any party) are spineless.

Any you likely support liberalism. Every wonder why Harpo does what
Obama wants? Because Obama has his Harvard fellow and buddy Iggy, the
US is MY country Iggy waiting to take Harpo's job.

Trouble is you liberal dick heads don't think before you vote.

I for one hope we do seperate, confederation colonialism SUCKS! Most
Albertians a pro-seperation, get over it. Sun had a poll on the day
after Dion/Laytoons miserable attempt at coupe d'etat and 78% by 4pm
said lets leave. CBC in crash mode for 4 days touting the Ottawa is
good line in damage control.

Even in a crappy economy, it costs Albertians 5 digits a year to stay in
confederation, I am sure our politicians don't want to test a public and
binding referendum on this issue.

Alberta will never separate, unless they want to live alone outside of a union
that provides them all they need vis a vis how things get there. Perhaps
Global Warming, which isn't happening according to so many of them, will allow
land locked Alberta access to the Arctic Ocean to move goods up the McKenzie
Delta! Yeah! That's the ticket!

Do you really think that if Alberta petitioned to be a protectorate of the
USA, that they would move ahead of the line from Guam or Puerto Rico to
statehood, and have a vote, or actual representation in Washington D. C.?

Can you say "slave".
