Hi, Is it a good idea to take a digital camera on a road bike? We 're going
on a 10 week trek htis summer. I've heard the road vibrations aren't good
for it.
Thanks,

I don't see any reason why a digital camera would be a subject to
vibrations that wouldn't affect a film camera. The memory cards are
solid state, not a hard drive that could suffer a head crash.

You should be concerned with battery consumption though. If your ten
week trip if without a support car lugging your baggage for you you
probably don't want to be carrying a battery charger.

Some camera cards are micro hard-drives and should be handled
with some care. I keep my digital camera in my back pocket so it doesn't
get as much abuse is it would on a rack. However, my film camera
survived thousands of kilometers over a decade of tough gravel
roads, capable of breaking a few spokes, with no damage. I would think
a digital camera turned off would be even better at taking abuse.
However, that would only go for the high-end cameras made for
semi/professional use. The sub $300 or non-metal frame cameras
I would treat with care. It is the bad solder joints that would
might be a problem.

There are lots of small chargers for AA batteries which would be
quite acceptable. If you're stuck with a proprietary format battery
and anchor size charger, maybe not.

In case you haven't left on your trip yet...

2 or 3 inches of foam padding all around the camera will dampen out
vibrations to a point where they won't affect even the most delicate
electronics. A Pelican case is ideal but heavy and bulky. In lieu of that, a
Tupperware container with foam would work. The foam I'm suggesting is the
same stuff you find in those Pelican cases. (grey, squishy)

Good luck and post pics!
