- Comments: "After the Caracara's initial disappearance from the County Road 50 location about 45 minutes earlier, I had begun casting an increasingly large net in an attempt to refind it. I figured Gore Rd would give me a good vantage with the sun at a favourable angle to look in the fields to the south. After turning onto Gore, I pulled into a farm entrance to scan the fields. Despite not seeing the bird, I had the feeling that it would be nearby. Less than a kilometre later, I spotted the bird walking through a field, less than 100 metres from the road! I immediately posted to Discord and called Keith, as I knew he was very close by. I jumped out of my car and sat in the ditch to snap a few decent photos of the bird close, but it continued to walk further out into the field. After updating the location to a pin drop, I looked up to see the bird randomly flying away to the east. It was eventually seen by a few others in that direction but remained incredibly elusive before returning west and disappearing near Amherstburg. Unbelievable bird! All credit to finder Eric Leene and refinders Markus Legzdins and Alex Skevington, who were the first on the scene on this day!"

Crested Caracara (Northern) (Caracara plancus cheriway) (1) CONFIRMED

- Comments: "The story of how two young chaps from Lindsay successfully twitched a Crested Caracara in Amherstberg, ON!

In the early hours of April 7, Alex and I departed our college campus in Lindsay just after midnight as this MEGA rarity had just come to light via eBird report. Five hours later, we arrived on scene and made quick work of locating the roadkill Opossum ~200m NW of 7143 County Rd 50 W. Exhausted & fatigued, we planned to get some sleep in until dawn. We parked along a nearby crossroad, and awoke an hour later.

At the first bit of light, we returned to the roadkill Opossum at 6:24am and began to scan the vast field to the north. Almost immediately, I picked out a distant large raptor perched atop a platform that turned out to be an Osprey after much scrutiny in low light. Hoping to try our luck elsewhere, we drove a quick circuit around town. It wasn't long before we were once again back at the Opossum site. Just after 7:00am, I locked on a bizzar-looking, large dark raptor in flight over toward the residence at 7143 and noted rapid wingbeats and then the flashes of white at the ends of the wings, on the rump and neck - it was the Crested Caracara... unbelievable! 🤯 I quickly ran over to tell Alex, screaming with excitement, and we both observed it make a low pass over County Rd 50 W and perch in a tall deciduous tree on the south side of the road. Here is where we were able to get our first photos of it.

Not even a minute later, it was flushed out of the tree by two American Crows, made a wide loop around us, and headed back toward the open field. This is where it finally settled down and remained for 15 minutes, 150m north of County Rd 50 W. During this time, many local birders and friends arrived on the scene like Cam Chevalier, Donny Moore, and Jeremy Hatt. Out in the field, it didn't do much of anything. It strolled around, walking on it's thin pale legs and swaying its tail with each stride. The two crows accompanied it out in the field and didn't seem to mind its presence much.

At 7:25am, the Crested Caracara was flushed by a Bald Eagle cruising over the field. It made a short and quick flight to the residence at 7143 and perched in the trees bordering the property. Cam, Alex, and were positioned infront of the large house when the Crested Caracarra dipped down out of the tree flew to the back of the house and appeared to land somewhere nearby, out of sight.

Turns out, it did not land nearby! It somehow evaded everyones eyes and snuck away. While everyone, including us, focused their search efforts around the house at 7143, it made a 3.3km flight to the east where Cam had relocated it in a field at 8:08am. It again took flight soon after being found by Cam and this would be a reoccurring theme throughout the rest of the morning; it was a very skittish bird.

We left Amherstberg by 9am to make it back in time for our class, after spending a few hours combing the agricultural fields without any luck. Despite a great search effort being put in by the community, it was reported to have never be seen on the ground again. Several reports throughout the morning indicated it in flight over various locations, making it incredibly difficult to locate for others as it followed no obvious pattern.

This was one of the most thrilling, exhausting, and eventful chases of my birding career so far, connecting with great people and birds along the way!

Huge shoutout to the lucky finder who made this all possible, Eric Leene! Congratulations on your phenomenal find!

He seemed to stick closely to a male scaup who was "barricading" him from a female scaup and once chased him away when he swam too close - just a quirky observation which may or may not be accurate. :). It stayed perched along the edge of the woodlot to the south of the pin where many others were able to see it. Apparently it flew at 3:40 (I had just left) somewhere to the SE. At around 8 AM I noticed an interesting small cormorant in the north part of cell 1 and snapped some photos, thinking it was a candidate for NECO but for some reason, at the time I wasn't sure (I don't know why, when I'm looking at the photos on my computer now!). I have been busy in the last couple days and didn't circle back to the cormorant photos. Seeing Nate Klassan's message about a NECO at Tommy Thompson on April 15, my heart sank as I remembered the weird small cormorant I briefly photographed on April 13....sure enough, it is the same NECO. See photo. Sorry everyone, my bad...."
