- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S194874767
- Comments: "At about 10:30 this morning, Vicky Mason Espin and I had a very distant but unmistakable first year YCNH feeding along the shore of Cootes Paradise by Highway 403. We were viewing it from the RBG boathouse, which was too distant (400 m) to allow cell phone photography of any quality, but the bird was feeding in front of a large culvert draining the highway, so it showed up clearly against the black background of the pipe bore.

It was immediately obvious that it was not a BCNH,  of which we saw 3 today. Its legs were almost as long as its body, as it stood upright and hunted. Its neck was at least 2/3 the length of its body and was held very erect, and its head was distinctly rounded, giving the appearance of a lollipop on a thick stick. Its bill was noticeably shorter compared to the head than a BCNH's.

While details of the plumage were not discernable at that distance, it appeared a more uniform grey-brown on the back,  chest and neck, with no hint of of the striping one sees on a first year BCNH.

The behaviour also was typical of YCNH, as it walked on erect legs while hunting, with the lead leg thrust ahead of the body on each step.

DM is familiar with this species, having encountered YCNH many times while birding in Florida and Central America."

- Comments: "Amazing! Small-ish sparrow with an enormous bill, green-gold background color to the entire head (except white throat), pale sandy color to the underparts and back, with stark blackish streaks on the back, flanks, and breast. Wings reddish, tail deeply notched with white edges. Seen at the west end of Mail Road, just outside the gates. Will upload photos ASAP.

To think that Jennifer Jackman had told me "Think how annoying it would be to see something interesting and wish you had your camera!"

This bird was actually one of the first few birds of the day, perched on the fence when we stepped out of the car.
Interestingly, it stayed in the open for about 15 minutes (allowing Gerry McKenna and co to see it and get pics when they arrived) and was quite vocal, calling and singing!"
