- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S162753818
- Media: 5 Photos
- Comments: "Much better lighting conditions today. First alternate bird with ~90% of the gr covs replaced (1-2 retained on L side). Nearly solid white alt median covs bleeding into white edging to the gr covs. Small black throat patch, black lores, faint eye line, and suggestion of a darker shadowed crown. Orange-olive tail with pale base and darker brown tips to the outer rects and extending up the central rects (backlit spread tail visible in Alex G’s photos from yesterday). Saturated yellow-orange cheek with a few orange feathers molting in. Grey lesser covs, olive-tinged back, all with diffuse dark centres. Contrast between the orange head and breast, greyish belly and flanks, and yellow-orange undertail and rump. Early photos from yesterday showing a solid orange wash in afternoon light seemed to suggest a hybrid, but feedback from a blackbird expert suggests that it looks fine for an advanced first spring male Bullock’s."

Bullock's Oriole (Icterus bullockii) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 24, 2024 12:41 by Sean Fraser
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S162809362
- Comments: "Continuing bird found by a High Park Legend, Donald Taylor, yesterday morning.

After a few hours of waiting, the bird made an appearance SW of the SW corner of the park. It flew behind the condos to an area viewable from a staircase. My initial viewing of this bird was not great - I was standing at the SW corner of the park and saw a yellow-orange bird as it flew from perch to perch.

My second viewing (after crossing both streets and climbing half of the stairs) was not much better - an oriole with small black throat patch and fairly straight bill. A few seconds later, the bird flew out of sight.

No photo available, I lost my opportunity trying to see the bird while physically in High Park."

Bullock's Oriole (Icterus bullockii) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 24, 2024 09:20 by Felix Eckley
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S162741392
- Media: 1 Photo
- Comments: "seen by many. photos taken. The bird is obviously an oriole. Numerous features rule out it being a pure orchard or baltimore oriole. These numerous features do point it to be a pure Bullocks oriole, but the possibility of it being a hybrid cannot be ruled out at our level of bird identification knowledge. Others with more knowledge are working to finalize the ID and we will ultimately defer to what makes sense in their determinations and amend our checklist if needed."

- Comments: "Seen on and off between ~12:30 pm and ~1:55 pm, for a total of ~35 to 45 min. viewing altogether.

Viewed in 10 x 42 Vortex binoculars, and also 22 – 60 x Vortex Razor Scope, mostly from ~15 to 20 m, but as close as ~4 m (at 60x), when it flew in close to me! Feeding on sap and/or insects attracted there on tree trunks, oranges, at feeders and (presumably) insects, etc. in vegetation tangles, between just above ground level and ~25 ft height, in shrubs, small deciduous trees and Phragmites (even this vile invasive can have a silver lining).

Mobs. Stakeout Bullock’s Oriole at High Park, Toronto – NE corner of Ellis Ave. & The Queensway. A heartfelt thanks to Donald Taylor for finding this great bird and to those who have been patiently feeding it (reportedly since Jan. 7). Thanks also to the friendly birders & photographers who helped everyone see the bird, and to the young birders at the site – yes Virginia, there are birders who aren’t boomers from the middle of the last century!

A first-year male with a black bib, yellow overall, black lores and a slight trace of a blackish eyeline, trace of a few orange feathers molting into the auricular area (only seen occasionally under ideal viewing conditions, generally at high magnification), pale whitish belly, with wings showing blackish “teeth” extending down into the white of the median coverts on the upper wingbars, tail slightly orangish."
