Then across the street to the no parking sign next to the nursing station. Then flew away. It was a non breading or juvenile bird. As it was flying we got a good chance to see the tail pattern. The elder I was with said she has never seen a bird that looks like that ever."

Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) (1)
- Reported Sep 14, 2023 17:40 by Bob Curry
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S149928798
- Media: 4 Photos
- Comments: "Almost certainly this bird spent a month in Buffalo in the summer then was seen on and over the Grand River in Brant a few weeks ago. Re-discovered in Oxford on September 12, then Owen Ridgen saw a report on iNat, Trisha Snider checked that out and voila THE BIRD. We were in Hamilton when the word got out, didn't have time to go home for binocs and camera, hence this was quintessential "pink birding".

We (and perhaps 30 friends) watched the bird across a quiet wooded pond from a distance of about 80-100 metres. It would occasionally jump up to an overhead tree branch on its side in the water and spread its wings. Just as we left it flew up the pond and towards our side.

DESCRIPTION: Medium-sized long-legged wader. The body was somewhat larger than adjacent Wood Ducks but of course it was on long legs. It fed by swishing its spatulate bill from side to side in the water.
Rear half overall fairly bright uniform pink including back, wings, tail and belly. Blackish tips to upper wing primary coverts when wing spread. Head upper back and breast off-white; the black eye very prominent against this pale colour. Legs pinkish straw, feet blackish. Bill about four times head length, with broad spatulate tip. Underside of bill dark but with striking yellow margin.

Note: As George Preiksaitis pointed out, Springwater was where Fred Bodsworth in 1942 found the first Hooded Warbler nest for Canada ( I saw HOWA here once in the 1960s.)."

Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) (1)
- Reported Sep 14, 2023 17:40 by Glenda Slessor
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S150060152
