A marina may have refuelling, washing and repair facilities, marine and boat chandlers, stores and restaurants.A marina may include ground facilities such as parking lots for vehicles and boat trailers. Slipways (or boat ramps) transfer a trailered boat into the water.A marina may have a travel lift, a specialised crane used for lifting heavier boats out of the water and transporting them around the hard stand. A marina may provide in- or out-of-water boat storage.

Fee-based services such as parking, use of picnic areas, pubs, and clubhouses for showers are usually included in long-term rental agreements. Visiting yachtsmen usually have the option of buying each amenity from a fixed schedule of fees; arrangements can be as wide as a single use, such as a shower, or several weeks of temporary berthing. The right to use the facilities is frequently extended at overnight or period rates to visiting yachtsmen.Since marinas are often limited by available space, it may take years on a waiting list to get a permanent berth.

Marina comes straight from Latin, where it means simply "of the sea". At a modern marina, sailors can acquire whatever they need for their next excursion, or they can tie up their boats until the next weekend comes along. Some even imitate John D. MacDonald's famous detective hero Travis McGee, who lives on his boat in Miami and rarely leaves the marina.

The NC Clean Marina program is designed to show that marina operators can help safeguard the environment by using management and operations techniques that go above and beyond regulatory requirements.

This voluntary program educates facility managers on how to protect and improve local water quality by promoting the use of environmentally sensitive practices at marinas. The program provides the tools, supplies, and consultation. Facilities earn certification after adopting clean marina practices, complying with existing environmental regulations, and committing to a cleaner marine environment to help protect Oregon's waterways.

Designated Clean Marinas earn a Clean Marina Flag and logo to use in their advertising. Boaters will know when they see the flag and logo, that they are looking at a marina that cares about the Oregon waterways. Marine facility managers also learn how to cut or reduce polluting materials in a waterway. They learn how to dispose of oil, paint, cleaning chemicals, sewage, fish waste, and trash. This goes a long way in helping the environment.

There are 63 certified Clean Marinas. There are approximately 175 public and private marinas in the state. Becoming a certified Clean Marina is FREE.

In 2017, facility spot-checks were done to assist participating marinas between scheduled visits. When agency staff travels the state, they perform short, unannounced site evaluations of certified facilities along the travel route. Spot-checks help both the Marine Board and the Clean Marinas in maintaining their facilities. This also helps keep alignment with program standards, and for staff to provide needed program materials.

This annual award is now in its third year recognizing certified facilities that are going above and beyond with their efforts to protect the environment. We realize that all program participants are doing good work and that remaining a certified marina after your reoccurring three-year evaluation is a major accomplishment for all participants. However, every summer a facility (marina or boatyard) stands out as going above and beyond, and we would like to formally recognize those participants. The group eligible for this award are the facilities that completed their re-certification during the previous year's field season (Summer of 2022 for this cycle).

leisure=marina is used to identify an area of land and probably also water used for the mooring and servicing of pleasure boats and yachts, often after paying a fee or by some other arrangement with the owner. A larger facility suitable for ships, trawlers or sea-going vessels should be tagged using harbour=* rather than marina.

Use leisure=marina on an area drawn around the perimeter of the facilities associated with a marina. The area should encompass its land-based services including amenity=toilets, amenity=shower, amenity=restaurant, waterway=fuel, shop=boat and also any area of water that is private property associated with the marina. This may include that part of a river or part of a lake in the immediate vicinity of jetties. The extent of the marina should not include water available to general boat traffic.

In case the marina cannot be mapped as an area (e.g., due to a lack of high resolution aerial imagery, or not having a clear picture of what the extent of the marine is) the marina can be mapped as a node placed centrally within the marina.

Caution. This tag was in the past used to tag only the water where the boats were moored. There is still some disagreement and confusion but OSM Carto marks a marina using a dotted blue line which is not filled in unless suitable tagging. The water area can be tagged with natural=water.
