nah, it doesn't look that good at all... yeah, the flexibility of the roads and building angles is great, but the textures of the buildings, roads etc. isn't that good... and, as always in promotion promotion videos, I don't believe that what you see it what you get... Just like that picture of the bridge you see when you start simcity4...quote>

I agree with wiecher, the roads and transportation flexibility are great but the building textures are awful. It's just that suspensful music in the background that throws you off from noticing it . Maybe I would try it out or buy it if it was a decent price but for $19,000 I think I might pass. But with such a high price the software was obviously ment for developers and urban planning firms.

We appreciate your kind words about CityScape. We work hard every day to make it the best city modeling software available. CityScape is currently being used by video game developers, simulation developers, urban planners, and more. We would love for everyone who is interested in CityScape to be able to use it and we do hope that one day, we can make it affordable for everyone. When that day comes, we'll be sure to post it here on Simtropolis. For now, I can point you to some more CityScape videos so that you can see what CityScape is capable of and how to get the most out of the demo.

Regarding the comments about the building texture quality. CityScape ships with a default library of buildings and textures. As a developer, you can import your own library and use buildings with higher quality geometry and texture sizes. The stock library is built for both quality and speed. To support large environment, (CityScape can create cities in excess of 15km x 15km), it's important to save resources where possible. Though we have some amazing LOD technology in CityScape, this doesn't completely alleviate hardware constraints. I hope you understand. Some of our clients have produced photo realistic environments with highly detailed buildings when working in smaller environments.

On another note, we just released a new version of CityScape 1.8.3 which has many of the "game" features this community may be interested in. CityScape 1.8.3 has been released and is immediately available for download. The changes for 1.8.3 include: Support for Intel graphics, ability to save terrains, gamepad controller layout added, user data path updated, and improved stability.

of course, however, i tried the demo quite some time ago, and the controls are very cumbersome and illogical(at least to me) and i seem to remember there being a simple modelling program included to create your own buildings, but i could be imagining???

It may be just as well that we downloaded the last demo, as I'm not sure a company that does navigation maps, etc for computers and mobile devices is going to keep developing CityScape or for that matter keep CityScape itself, I hope I'm wrong only time will tell.

And I would like to add ... Don't think that you're going to start laying out freeways and flyovers right away. It ain't easy ... There is almost TOO much detail to work with... and you really have to have a somewhat working knowledge of computerized city planning in order work it... and I unfortunately don't . But the demo doesn't have a expiration date so I will try it out in bits and pieces until I get it right ....

ah great - i hopefully - maybe they should realise some have full versions but they should send old cityscape to opensource or sell off to someone that wants keep the cityscape cause the demos are still around - they should changed to full one

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

A workmate has drawn my attention to a new tool for constructing 3d city models: CityScape 1.6 by PixelActive. Although I had no time to try the demo yet, it seems to me that the included models fit best for cities in Norther America. The supported file formats include elevation data and Collada, which makes it interesting for city planners, too. Another interesting feature is the real-time animation. However, my guess is that it is most useful for game designers.

Secondly we do not do landscape visualization just for the fun of visualizing a landscape, but because we think that landscape visualizations can support planning descisions and communication processes in planning processes. Thus we have an aim, a goal why we visualize and this goal is the driver for visualizing rural landscapes, as well as suburban landscapes or cityscapes. I think that we will benefit if we are looking at concepts from landscape and city visualization/modelling at the same time and relate the visualization concepts to the underlying planning tasks.

Another reason to include digital cities from my point of view is that I am currently working on a project which deals with virtual 3d city models and visualization of the cityscape. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany and deals with the usability to support communication and information in urban land management by using virtual 3d city models as integration media for heterogeneous data. For more information hava a look at www.refina3d.de. (only in German)
