In the time of Śrīman Mahāprabhu, the standard was extraordinarily high—one lakh 𝘯ā𝘮, one hundred thousand Holy Names daily. This was not an imposed discipline but the natural overflow of awakened hearts. Yet, even then, many could not maintain that standard. Seeing the condition of the 𝘫ī𝘷𝘢𝘴, Ś𝐫ī𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐢 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐡ā𝐧𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐭ī Ṭ𝐡ā𝐤𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐡𝐮𝐩ā𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝—𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐤𝐡, 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝. This was not compromise—it was compassion. The current of grace descends according to capacity, but the goal remains unchanged.

Ś𝐫ī𝐥𝐚 𝐀.𝐂. 𝐁𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝ā𝐧𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐰ā𝐦ī 𝐌𝐚𝐡ā𝐫ā𝐣 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐡𝐮𝐩ā𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐨𝐰, knowing the restless nature of modern society. But we must understand a deeper truth: 𝘥ī𝘬ṣā is not a formality, nor a badge of religious identity. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞—𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐲. No. We are entering a life of service under guidance. Our life becomes guided, not independent. 𝐓𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮, “𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲,” 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐭, 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫—𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮-𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐫ā𝐝𝐡𝐚. And when such neglect becomes casual, it opens the door to deeper disobedience.

We see this pattern historically and presently. Śrīla Swāmī Mahārāj Prabhupād clearly indicated that his followers should take shelter and guidance from Śrīla Bhakti Rakṣak Śrīdhar Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj. Yet many chose independence. Similarly, some claim loyalty to Śrīla Śrīdhar Mahārāj by maintaining a minimum of four rounds, but simultaneously commit grave offence by rejecting Śrīla Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj, whom Śrīla Śrīdhar Mahārāj himself appointed and empowered. What kind of loyalty is this? 𝐓𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧—𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. The same deviation is now seen among those who claim to follow Śrīla Govinda Mahārāj but refuse to accept his chosen successor, Śrīla Bhakti Nirmal Āchārya Goswāmī Mahārāj. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲—𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮-𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫ā.

The scriptures declare:

“ataḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmādi na bhaved grāhyam indriyaiḥ

sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ”

(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.2.234)

The Holy Name cannot be accessed by our independent effort—it reveals Himself only to one engaged in service. Therefore, chanting is not merely numerical—it is relational. Without obedience, without surrender, without alignment to Guru’s will, our chanting risks becoming mechanical sound. This is why our Guru-varga emphasised: quality over quantity. But real quality comes only when the heart is aligned with Guru-paramparā.

We must be very clear: initiation means connection, not convenience. It means to live under the current of Guru’s will, not to selectively accept what suits our mind. 𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬—𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭. This is the tragedy of spiritual life when independence replaces surrender.

Therefore, the harmonised conclusion of our line is this: 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲. 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲. 𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞. If the connection is living, even a few Names will carry you to the transcendental plane. But if that connection is broken, even many rounds may not touch the reality of Kṛṣṇa-𝘯ā𝘮. Let us therefore be sincere, loyal, and surrendered—then the Holy Name Himself will reveal His full grace.
