Hello Everyone,

We had to push back the meeting this month to 2/15/12 since several
members could not make it. See you all at the Liberty Glass at 6pm.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-liberty-glass-portland.

I misplaced my notes from the last meeting. What was the topic that
we wanted to discuss?

Let me know if you can make it.

Thanks

Kerry

Looks like I'm going to miss this one. My chaotic schedule currently
has me going to CA on the 15th for some business meetings :)

Works for me! I wasn't going to make it on the 8th, so this is great.

Kerry:

Have a work project that has to be done tomorrow morning...sorry won't make it...but the member engagement topic is an excellent one. Any chance someone is willing to take and post any good suggestions that come out of the discussion.

Wanted to give everyone a quick rundown of what we discussed at our last meet up. The topic was Engagement. I presented my challenges with increasing levels of engagement with a new community of energy efficiency professionals (you can see the site at www.conduitnw.org if you like). Many good ideas were brought forth:
  1. Develop personal relationships with key advocates.
  2. Reward key advocates (and other members, for that matter) when they exhibit desired behaviors (i.e. posting an article).
  3. Feature your rock star users (home page, newsletters, leader board).
  4. Rather than focus on building engagement with the broad community, focus on building niche groups with a smaller, geographical orientation (such as all the utilities in Central Oregon)  or interest area (heating and cooling systems). (Note: this has been a backseat strategy for me for a while and I've brought it back to the front seat. Just yesterday I met with a bunch of utilities from the central Oregon region and they just set up a new group to connect before and after their semi-annual meetings. They were quite excited.)
  5.  Warmly usher new members in; and educate them in how to use the site.

That's all I recall. If there were other ideas that I left out, please share.

Best,
Ben

Ben:

This is great. Thanks so much for providing these notes.

I can relate to many of these steps…and niches are definitely useful for creating "families" of users.

Did you guys happen to discuss at all metrics for engagement. Probably it will depend on the purpose of the site set out by the stakeholders…but just curious if that was talked about at all.

Also, any discussion of gamefication efforts to develop engagement opportunities and experiences.

Would be interesting to find out about other specific types of activities anyone has used to create particular behavior: contributions of content, conversion from visitor to member, member to customer, member to VIP, member to blogger or moderator of others' participation?

Perhaps topics for another meeting. :-)

Again, thank SO much for the notes.

Best,
Ann Marcus
