Wikipedia reaches one million German entries

The online encyclopaedia Wikipedia recorded its one-millionth entry in
German on Sunday.
The milestone marks the rampant growth of the popular internet
reference resource in German, which is Wikipedia’s second-largest
language after English.
However, it is not yet clear what the millionth entry will be: an
article about the US gardener Ernie Wasson could be deleted due to its
low relevancy to German readers. An alternative might be an article on
the German speed skater Robert Seifert.
The very first German Wikipedia entry was submitted on May 12, 2001.
Since then, the encyclopaedia has become immensely popular in the
German-speaking world. Only English, with more than three million
entries, is larger.
Wikipedia offers information in more than 184 different languages.

Projekt in Deutschland. Auch wenn es hier und da Probleme in der
strategischen Ausrichtung des so amorph organisierten Projektes gibt,
zeigt die Wikimedia Foundation, dass Freiwilligenarbeit und Web 2.0
zusammenpasst.

Ja, Wikipedia ist klar eine Online-Volunteering-Initiative. Sämtliche
Beiträge werden durch Freiwillige erstellt. Eine Anmeldung bei der
Wikipedia ist ratsam, aber nicht notwendig um sich zu beteiligen. Die
Wikipedia selbst ist fast ausschließlich spendenfinanziert.
Die Frage ist immer, wie man "Größe" definiert. Gemessen an der Anzahl
der Leser ist die Wikipedia mit Sicherheit die größte
Online-Volunteering-Initiative - sowohl in Deutschland als auch
weltweit. Schaut man sich aber die Anzahl der aktiven Mitarbeiter an,
so ist diese vergleichsweise übersichtlich. Welches Projekt an zweiter
Stelle kommen würde, kann ich nicht sagen.
Falls ich dich missverstanden habe und sich deine Frage auf die
unterschiedlichen Sprachversionen der Wikipedia beziehen sollte, dann
ist weiterhin die englischsprachige Wikipedia die größte Version
gemessen an der Anzahl der Artikel (3,1+ Millionen Artikel), gefolgt
von der deutschsprachigen (1,0+ Millionen Artikel) auf Platz 2 und der
französischen (~900k Artikel) auf Platz 3.

That's not correct. This isn't the first entry. It's only *the oldest
still existing entry* which is still in our database.

fragen: Wer macht das meiste? Wer leistet das meiste? Wer schafft das
meiste? ...
Zwei relativ objektive Varianten sind mir dabei bekannt: (a) Der
Social-Return-Of-Invenstment-Ansatz, bei dem der volkswirtschaftliche
Nutzen der freiwilligen Leistungen in den Vordergrund gerückt wird und
(b) die quantitative Zählung der Volunteer-Tasks, bei denen völlig
egal ist, ob und was dabei herauskommt.
Beide Ansätze haben ihre Vorteile, bei dem einen (bei B) beschränkt
Freiwilligenarbeit nicht nur auf den Nutzen, den es bringen kann --
fasst es also breiter --, bei dem anderen (bei A) kann man einen
wirtschaftlich relevanten Wert ermitteln, der sich auch besser
Verkaufen lässt.

Anyway, it is difficult to quantify volunteer work. We could ask: Who
is doing the most? Who afford the most? Who create the most? ...
I know two concepts: (a) The social return of investment and (b) the
quantitatve counting of volunteer tasks.
Both concepts have their pros. B quantifies volunteer work without the
effort or sens that is allways constructed and A supplies a economical
value one can "sell".
In both ways, I would say, the Wikipedia is the biggest online
volunteering project.
