The students are part of the school's performance-based diploma academy, a combination of self-paced computer learning and regular classroom instruction. Superintendent Gary Norris used the program in in Florida and is duplicating it in Waterloo Community Schools. It uses software created by Plato Learning, customized for the district. The initiative targets students failing in traditional classrooms or on the verge of dropping out. Administrators maintain it delivers the same content, but the approach is more effective at engaging today's "digital" learners.
