OK, there is a LOT of debate on this post back at OD4U. This is where
you can express your opinions on this matter. All posts will be
moderated, so please keep it civil.

It is so easy for us to say, "this is so stupid that i am not going to
dignify it with serious consideration." However, this gives these
thoughts room to survive in the minds of the non rational. I believe
that we, as rational human being, have a duty to aggressively fight
back against non rational ideas. This is for the good of man kind.

So here is the problem with The Secret, and why "The Law of
Attraction" is fundamentally inconsistent with itself and cannot be
used to make useful predictions. In short, it just makes no sense.

The Law of Attraction, which is the heart of the secret, states that
if you think about something, then that thought unleashes a cosmic
force of some sort that makes it happen, or influences nature to make
it more likely to happen. In short, your thoughts influence your
world. For example, if you want more money, that thought draws more
money to you. However, according to this "law", this influence works
both way. for example, if you fear a traffic jam, that thought draws a
traffic jam towards you. It does not matter if your thought is
positive or negative, you attract what you think towards you. This is
where, under critical examination, this line of thinking falls part.

Using our traffic jam example, which was used in the Secret, we can
see that, fear of traffic jam, brings traffic jam (or a higher likely
hood of traffic jam). But what if i fear more money?? (as a Marxist
this is not really out of the question) An interesting thing happens
in this case. if fear of traffic jam, bring traffic jam, then fear of
more money should bring more money. Because the "law" has no ability
to distinguish between positive, and the negative, it runs in to great
problems when anyone wishes the negative.

one more example of this problem should make this clear, according to
the "law" if i fear my garden will be overrun with weeds, then it
would attract more weeds towards me. but if i fear my garden will be
overrun with beautiful flowers, then it would attract more beautiful
flowers... this paradox becomes even more confusing when we add the
word no/not. what if we say I want no traffic jam, would traffic jam
happen, or no traffic jam?? If this "law" is true, this leaves a huge
exploit that anyone can use. Simply wish the negative. If i work
really hard at avoiding more money, but the "law" can't distinguish
the negative, i must then get more money.

This is what i mean when i say that it is inconsistent. Under the
"law", we don't know what happens when we wish the negative. we can't
predict what we are drawing when we wish the negative. It just makes
no sense.

I agree that The Secret is stupid. I myself have not watched it, but I
will soon.

That being said yeungx, you said, "I believe
that we, as rational human being, have a duty to aggressively fight
back against non rational ideas. This is for the good of man kind."

Well, again I agree, but there is so much stuff out there that falls
into this category that it would be impossible for us to "filter" it
all for the stupid people. People have to learn to think for
themselves and make their own decision. If we all want to live in a
free world, then we have to let people make their "stupid" decisions.

I agree there is a lot of BS out there, and fight all of them would be
major work. but i believe we should, moreover, we have to duty, to do
as much as we can. just like world peace, and world hunger, yes it
would be impossible to achieve, but i think we should do our best. one
of the states in US just redefined science to include supernatural
explanation. (saw that on one of the docs) this can only happen,
because rational people did not speak up.
