An electrical transformer is an apparatus that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors—the transformer's windings. The primary winding (connected to the power source) induces a current in the secondary winding, which in turn powers the load. Transformers range in size from small units that can fit within a wristwatch to giants weighing hundreds of tons.

The most common type of transformer today is the laminated steel core type, which is made up of thin steel laminations insulated from each other with varnish or enamel. In this type, the alternating current in the primary winding creates a rotating magnetic field in the core. This field induces a current in the secondary winding, and because the secondary is wound on top of the primary, it also creates a rotating magnetic field there.
