Updating the firmware will delete some data from your Brother machine such as secured print data, caller ID log, journal report, outgoing message, and more (features depend on your model machine). We recommend that you read the installation notes on the download page before running the firmware update tool.
a. Double-click the installer package icon FirmwareUpdateTool.pkg or BrMainXXXX.dmg.
b. Follow the onscreen instructions to run the firmware update tool.
c. If prompted to enter your password, enter your Mac password and click Install Software.
If you don't know your system password, contact Apple or your network administrator for help.
d. Click FirmwareUpdater.jar.
If you receive a message stating: To use the "java -jar FirmwareUpdater.jar" command-line tool you need to install JDK, visit to download the Java SE Development Kit.
e. Select your language and click Continue.
f. Select the way your machine is connected to the Internet (Connect Directly is most common) and click Continue. Go to step 5.
a. Make sure that your computer is connected to your network.
b. Make sure your anti-virus software and firewall software are temporarily disabled.
c. If your machine is connected using a network connection, and steps a and b don't resolve the issue, switch your machine to a USB connection and try the update again.
d. Macintosh users - You may need to use a different version of Java. Click here for instructions.
a. Make sure that the Brother machine is turned on and do one of the following:
- USB users - Make sure the USB cable is directly connected to your machine and your computer.
The firmware cannot be updated if you're printing using printer sharing and the Brother machine is connected to a different computer.
- Wired Network users (for supported models) - Make sure the network cable is connected to the machine and the router.
- Wireless Network users (for supported models) - Make sure that your computer is connected to the same wireless network as the machine.
b. You may need to temporarily disable the anti-virus software and firewall software.
Your machine's default password may be one of the following based on manufacture date:
- initpass
- access
- Some machines will have it listed on the back next to "PWD".
Not all machines will have a password label. Try one of the other possible default passwords.
If you've created a custom password for your Brother machine's settings, and you've forgotten the password, you'll need to reset the network card to factory default to regain access to these settings. We cannot help you recover a lost password.
I have 4 Brother Printers. 3 - MFC - L2750DW and 1 - MFC - L2740DW that as of May 1st receive an error when uploading scanned documents to the assigned dropbox folder. I have created new credentials and everything worked, including picking the dropbox folder. But still fails at upload.
This worked flawlessly for the past 3 years. The last time this happened was 2021.
I see another post regarding similar issue happening with Epson printers as well. It appears the certificate / token that dropbox issued for this service has expired.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Any work arounds?

I appreciate the thoughtful response. And I know I mentioned Epson but my post, including the title was about Brother Web Connect Integration.
I apologize if you are an unpaid volunteer working on this site, and not a Dropbox employee. If you are a volunteer, please forgive the rest of this note it is based on the assumption that you are in an official support role.
Jay, you seem knowledgeable, so would really like your opinion on this.
On May 1st all my Brother Printers Dropbox Upload integration quit working with Dropbox.
Around May 1st several other people (not me mind you); that own Epson printers are having the exact same issue.
Here is where I need your help. What do both of these problems have in common?
What are the odds that two completely different Printer Companies both did something on their side the same day that would make you think it is a "third party problem", definitely not a Drop box problem, nothing to see here, move along....
Again, you are the expert, but I think your initial response was a pretty easy knee jerk one to make. It would be great if you and Dropbox had nothing to do with this and would not need to spend any time looking into or resolving it. Just a simple 'Not my problem"
But would be wonderful if you would either spend a little time reflecting on it, or possibly escalate the question up a level or two so it can at least be giving serious consideration.
The integration with MS OneDrive still works. If I am having this problem with Drop Box, there are countless others having the same issue. All you have to do is read the recent posts here.
But it sounds like you prefer this headline on the Tech Journals. Dropbox Drops Ball on Integration. National outage impacts 10,000s of users across several different hardware integration solutions including all Epson and Brother's products.
Recent post on their forum from Jay, the Support Expert, states they are not interested in solution. Jay says its Brother Printers and Epson's problem to deal with.
Please tell me this is not the official Dropbox perspective.
@DBinBigD Jay is an official Dropbox representative. However, the issue remains that, unfortunately, it is up to Brother (and other suppliers) to update API keys, etc. if they expire or are out of date.
Did this post not resolve your issue? If so please give us some more information so we can try and help - please remember we cannot see over your shoulder so be as descriptive as possible!
Thank you, I am doing my best to blast Brother too. And having about the same level of success.
The problem is I am dealing with the lowest level of support there is. And what needs to happen is technically knowledgeable people on both sides need to #1) Be aware there is a problem and then #2) collaborate to resolve. But the low level support at both companies immediately dismiss the issue as soon as they realize that they can blame someone else. It just needs to be escalated to a high enough level, that someone that knows what is going on, can call their counterpart and resolve it.
Thank you. That was a great suggestion. I should have thought of that myself. It took awhile to get the firm ware completely up to date. For the MFC - L2740DW, the most recent is 1.06 from Sept '23. Unfortunately updating the firmware did not fix the problem.
I recommend the following:
a) It's in the best interest of Dropbox to engage directly with Epson and Brother to resolve this integration issue. Given that multiple users are experiencing similar problems with Dropbox integration across different printer brands, collaboration between Dropbox and these companies would likely lead to a faster and more effective solution.
c) I look forward to hearing from Dropbox as soon as this issue is resolved. It's important for users to stay updated on progress and eventual solutions to ensure a seamless printing and file management experience.
Yesterday, the status monitor software of my Brother HL-2250DN informed me about a new firmware update. I decided to install the update, but at 90%, the update process interrupted. The update tool complained that it cannot connect to the printer anymore.
In order to use the BrotherHL2-Maintenance interface to restore the firmware, you need a driver for the interface. These drivers are available to authorized service partners only. After a bit of research, I found out that the driver ZIP archive is called BHL2-Maintenance.zip. The file can be found using Google, for example here. You also need the firmware restore tool which is called FILEDG32.exe.
The hardest part was to find the appropriate firmware for the HL-2250DN. At the Brother website, you can only download a firmware update tool which does not contain the actual firmware data but downloads it from the web. Of course, the tool does not recognize the BrotherHL2-Maintenance and fails (no printer found).
The Mac OS X version of the firmware update tool is a Java application which can be analyzed quite easily after decompressing the JAR file. Analysis of the application shows that it gets the link to the appropriate firmware from a web service located at
firmverup.brother.co.jp.
This procedure should work for other Brother printers as well, as long as it is being recognized as BrotherHL2-Maintenance USB device in the device manager. You will have to find the appropriate firmware for your printer by using the
firmverup.brother.co.jp web service. In the XML request file, replace the MODEL and SPEC fields and the FIRMINFO entries. Note that the SPEC field is empty for the HL-2250DN, but may contain a value for other printers.
You will have to know the correct MODEL and SPEC values and also the FIRMINFO entries. This can be quite difficult. I found out the values for the HL-2250DN by querying a functional printer of the same model using SNMP:
