Question: What is the proper way of resetting the SNMP of EB4-1U to its factory default?
Why this reset is needed?.
Answer: Here are the correct steps on how "To restore or reset the EB4-1U unit to its factory default values" *_NOTE:_* Prior to performing the reset or restore you must *Set the unit in standby mode* by having the main power switch to off
position and the two power supply module switches to on position
STEPS:
1. set two Power Supply module switches to ON position
2. Set the main power switch to off
3. Press and hold down the Alarm Reset Button for 10 seconds
4. Power LED will blink during this second period.
When all values have been restored, the LED will stop blink and turn off
5. Now, turn on the power switch to start the unit.
The reset to factory defaults feature is meant to enable the chassis to revert back to a known state. This way if the chassis is ever configured in such a way that a technician can no longer communicate with it via the Ethernet or if one of the configurable sensors is set to an inconsistent value the chassis may be placed in a known state and re-configured. The reason that the reset function only works when the power switch is turned off is to avoid having a unit reset during and operational state.
Question: What might cause corruption resulting in the need to reset to defaults
Answer: The corruption can be caused by operator errors or incorrect configuration in SNMP.
All it does is reset the non volatile memory to known working values. There are settings stored in non volatile memory, for example the IP address that are configurable through operator action. The configuration can be done either through the embedded Web pages, or using the SNMP protocol. The capability was added solely to solve the possibility that the Network settings could be set to a value that prevented communication to the chassis over Ethernet which would prevent the ability to change the settings and fix the issue. It sounds as if the settings of the units became corrupted,
