I'm only a beginner when it comes to Java, but I'd love to help in any way that I can with the the OneBusAway project.

What kinds of things could I help with? Perhaps writing documentation or something of that sort?

If you are interested in the "enterprise" version of OneBusAway, the instance deployed to NYC, you could help by verifying the developer setup:
