²And the sons of Tola; Uzzi, and Rephaiah, and Jeriel, and Jahmai, and Jibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their father’s house, to wit, of Tola: they were valiant men of might in their generations; whose number was in the days of David two and twenty thousand and six hundred.

³And the sons of Uzzi; Izrahiah: and the sons of Izrahiah; Michael, and Obadiah, and Joel, Ishiah, five: all of them chief men.

⁴And with them, by their generations, after the house of their fathers, were bands of soldiers for war, six and thirty thousand men: for they had many wives and sons.

⁵And their brethren among all the families of Issachar were valiant men of might, reckoned in all by their genealogies fourscore and seven thousand.

⁶ ¶ The sons of Benjamin; Bela, and Becher, and Jediael, three.

⁷And the sons of Bela; Ezbon, and Uzzi, and Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and Iri, five; heads of the house of their fathers, mighty men of valour; and were reckoned by their genealogies twenty and two thousand and thirty and four.

⁸And the sons of Becher; Zemira, and Joash, and Eliezer, and Elioenai, and Omri, and Jerimoth, and Abiah, and Anathoth, and Alameth. All these are the sons of Becher.

⁹And the number of them, after their genealogy by their generations, heads of the house of their fathers, mighty men of valour, was twenty thousand and two hundred.

¹⁰The sons also of Jediael; Bilhan: and the sons of Bilhan; Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tharshish, and Ahishahar.

¹¹All these the sons of Jediael, by the heads of their fathers, mighty men of valour, were seventeen thousand and two hundred soldiers, fit to go out for war and battle.

¹²Shuppim also, and Huppim, the children of Ir, and Hushim, the sons of Aher.^a,^b

¹³ ¶ The sons of Naphtali; Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah.

¹⁴ ¶ The sons of Manasseh; Ashriel, whom she bare: (but his concubine the Aramitess bare Machir the father of Gilead:

¹⁵And Machir took to wife the sister of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister’s name was Maachah;) and the name of the second was Zelophehad: and Zelophehad had daughters.

¹⁶And Maachah the wife of Machir bare a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rakem.

¹⁷And the sons of Ulam; Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh.

¹⁸And his sister Hammoleketh bare Ishod, and Abiezer, and Mahalah.

¹⁹And the sons of Shemida were, Ahian, and Shechem, and Likhi, and Aniam.

²⁰ ¶ And the sons of Ephraim; Shuthelah, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eladah his son, and Tahath his son,

²¹ ¶ And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew, because they came down to take away their cattle.

²²And Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brethren came to comfort him.

²³ ¶ And when he went in to his wife, she conceived, and bare a son, and he called his name Beriah, because it went evil with his house.

²⁴(And his daughter was Sherah, who built Beth–horon the nether, and the upper, and Uzzen–sherah.)

²⁵And Rephah was his son, also Resheph, and Telah his son, and Tahan his son,

²⁶Laadan his son, Ammihud his son, Elishama his son,

²⁷Non his son, Jehoshua his son.^c,^d

²⁸ ¶ And their possessions and habitations were, Beth–el and the towns thereof, and eastward Naaran, and westward Gezer, with the towns thereof; Shechem also and the towns thereof, unto Gaza and the towns thereof:^e,^f

²⁹And by the borders of the children of Manasseh, Beth–shean and her towns, Taanach and her towns, Megiddo and her towns, Dor and her towns. In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel.^g

³⁰ ¶ The sons of Asher; Imnah, and Isuah, and Ishuai, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.

³¹And the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel, who is the father of Birzavith.

³²And Heber begat Japhlet, and Shomer, and Hotham, and Shua their sister.

³³And the sons of Japhlet; Pasach, and Bimhal, and Ashvath. These are the children of Japhlet.

³⁴And the sons of Shamer; Ahi, and Rohgah, Jehubbah, and Aram.

³⁵And the sons of his brother Helem; Zophah, and Imna, and Shelesh, and Amal.

³⁶The sons of Zophah; Suah, and Harnepher, and Shual, and Beri, and Imrah,

³⁷Bezer, and Hod, and Shamma, and Shilshah, and Ithran, and Beera.

³⁸And the sons of Jether; Jephunneh, and Pispah, and Ara.

³⁹And the sons of Ulla; Arah, and Haniel, and Rezia.

⁴⁰All these were the children of Asher, heads of their father’s house, choice and mighty men of valour, chief of the princes. And the number throughout the genealogy of them that were apt to the war and to battle was twenty and six thousand men.

¹Now Benjamin begat Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, and Aharah the third,

²Nohah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth.

³And the sons of Bela were, Addar, and Gera, and Abihud,^h

⁴And Abishua, and Naaman, and Ahoah,

⁵And Gera, and Shephuphan, and Huram.ⁱ

⁶And these are the sons of Ehud: these are the heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Geba, and they removed them to Manahath:

⁷And Naaman, and Ahiah, and Gera, he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud.

⁸And Shaharaim begat children in the country of Moab, after he had sent them away; Hushim and Baara were his wives.

⁹And he begat of Hodesh his wife, Jobab, and Zibia, and Mesha, and Malcham,

¹⁰And Jeuz, and Shachia, and Mirma. These were his sons, heads of the fathers.

¹¹And of Hushim he begat Abitub, and Elpaal.

¹²The sons of Elpaal; Eber, and Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod, with the towns thereof:

¹³Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath:

¹⁴And Ahio, Shashak, and Jeremoth,

¹⁵And Zebadiah, and Arad, and Ader,

¹⁶And Michael, and Ispah, and Joha, the sons of Beriah;

¹⁷And Zebadiah, and Meshullam, and Hezeki, and Heber,

¹⁸Ishmerai also, and Jezliah, and Jobab, the sons of Elpaal;

¹⁹And Jakim, and Zichri, and Zabdi,

²⁰And Elienai, and Zilthai, and Eliel,

²¹And Adaiah, and Beraiah, and Shimrath, the sons of Shimhi;^j

²²And Ishpan, and Heber, and Eliel,

²³And Abdon, and Zichri, and Hanan,

²⁴And Hananiah, and Elam, and Antothijah,

²⁵And Iphedeiah, and Penuel, the sons of Shashak;

²⁶And Shamsherai, and Shehariah, and Athaliah,

²⁷And Jaresiah, and Eliah, and Zichri, the sons of Jeroham.

²⁸These were heads of the fathers, by their generations, chief men. These dwelt in Jerusalem.

²⁹And at Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon; whose wife’s name was Maachah:^k

³⁰And his firstborn son Abdon, and Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Nadab,

³¹And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zacher.^l

³²And Mikloth begat Shimeah. And these also dwelt with their brethren in Jerusalem, over against them.^m

³³ ¶ And Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchi–shua, and Abinadab, and Esh–baal.^n,^o

³⁴And the son of Jonathan was Merib–baal; and Merib–baal begat Micah.^p

³⁵And the sons of Micah were, Pithon, and Melech, and Tarea, and Ahaz.^q

³⁶And Ahaz begat Jehoadah; and Jehoadah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza,^r

³⁷And Moza begat Binea: Rapha was his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son:^s

³⁸And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel.

³⁹And the sons of Eshek his brother were, Ulam his firstborn, Jehush the second, and Eliphelet the third.

⁴⁰And the sons of Ulam were mighty men of valour, archers, and had many sons, and sons’ sons, an hundred and fifty. All these are of the sons of Benjamin.

Zephaniah 3

¹Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!^t

²She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.^u

³Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

⁴Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

⁵The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.^v

⁶I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.^w

⁷I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

⁸ ¶ Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the Lord, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

⁹For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.^x,^y

¹⁰From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.

¹¹In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.^z

¹²I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord.

¹³The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

¹⁴ ¶ Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

¹⁵The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

¹⁶In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.^aa

¹⁷The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.^ab

¹⁸I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.^ac

¹⁹Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.^ad,^ae

²⁰At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

John 1:19-34

¹⁹ ¶ And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

²⁰And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

²¹And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

²²Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

²³He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

²⁴And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

²⁵And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

²⁶John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

²⁷He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

²⁸These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ ¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

³⁰This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

³¹And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

³²And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

³³And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

³⁴And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

Now ask: How does this truth help me praise God? How does it show me a sin to confess? How does it show me something to ask God for?
