Monarchs reported yesterday and today in Vermilion Bay and Sioux Lookout in Northern Ontario. I am encouraging these observers on Facebook to file a report - in both cases with a great photos of both monarchs on lilacs - to Journey North. Also encouraging them to download the Project Monarch App.

Monarch Watch in Lawrence Kansas released a number of monarchs bearing the new Blu+ solar powered radio transmitters:

"Monarch affixed by Monarch Watch in Lawrence, KS, U.S.A., 17 days ago with one of the new Blu+ lightweight, solar-powered transmitters (developed by Cellular Tracking Technologies) has been detected in Manitoba and Saskatchewan! A cell phone running the Project Monarch Science app can detect a Blu+ (Blū) tag from 50 to 100 meters away and even further, depending on line-of-sight and environmental interference. These transmitters operate on Bluetooth frequencies and are used in citizen science tracking projects. Be a part of this exciting new science! Other KS tagged monarchs heading north may reach Canada. Download and activate the Project Monarch app. See: lawrencekstimes (dot) com/2026/05/30/monarch-watch-butterfly-tags/. Media inquiries: Kristen Baum, Director, Monarch Watch (kb...@ku.edu)"

Attached photo is last location at which this monarch was detected in Manitoba by a cell phone loaded with the app. Will this monarch be detected again? Moving into less inhabited terrain. Screenshot 2026-06-10 at 9.01.06 PM.png
