Late Monarch Sightings From All Over Southern Ontario

One on October 21st in Port Hope but on the Facebook group Monarchs Migrating Through Ontario, many new postings, including individual photographed one hour west of Ottawa, southwest Mississauga, Val Des Monts (Quebec), Newton, Shallow Lake (44.6 deg N lat). A few individuals have been reported from the various hawk watches. Other late sightings, particularly today?

At least 2 flying around the beach at Port Glasgow on the Lake Erie shoreline right now.

At least 6 monarchs nectaring on what flowers are still blooming today at Rosetta MG and we also saw 2 flying from east to west over the lake. Other butterflies seen were a few sulphurs (both clouded and orange), 1 american lady, 1 common blue and 3 buckeyes.

Steve LaForest told me that he observed 11 flying west through the Port Glasgow Marina, along the edge of the Lake, between 1:30 and 5 p.m.

but unfortunately no Black-tailed Gull :-(

I photographed 3 monarchs and an orange sulphur at the Guild Inn on Oct 30 and a single monarch was still there on Oct 31. Probably a long shot but the weather forecast calls for mid-week temperatures in the high teens so I am hoping for some November butterfly sightings.

My latest sighting ever was at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on one November 8th. A cold cloudy day, I had waded over to Gull Island where one monarch was going nowhere quickly on this windy day, with a few remaining flowering thistles as nectar sources. Late dates for Point Pelee include: "one (extremely fresh female) on

December 4, 1982 (Michael J. Oldham, Alan Wormington); one on December 4, 1995 (Enid Bull)." There is a record of one monarch being spotted one year in Ontario during a Christmas Bird Count.

As many will have now heard, monarchs were observed arriving on Cerro Pelon and El Rosario and other locations in the Monarch Reserve on October 30th as usual and just before Day of the Dead.
