In Hinduism, the primary purpose of fasting on Ekadashi is to gain control over the mind and bodily senses, and channel it towards spiritual progression. In addition, there are several health benefits to fasting.[4] Ekadashi fasting spans for three days. Devotees take single meal in the afternoon a day before Ekadashi day(Dasami) to make sure there is no residual food in the stomach on next day. Devotees keep a strict fast with no food or water on Ekadashi day and break the fast on next day(Dwadashi) only after sunrise.[5] Since this form of fasting is very stringent and may not be possible for people in all walks of life due to health and life choice reasons, a more liberal from of fasting is followed by most devotees.[citation needed]
There are different ways to observe the Ekadashi fasting in this method,[6] ranging from complete abstention from food and water to partial fasting or consuming only specific types of food. Devotee can chose the fasting approach that aligns with his/her health, lifestyle, and spiritual goals.[citation needed]
The timing of each ekadashi is according to the position of the moon.[7] The Hindu calendar marks progression from a full moon to a new moon as divided into fifteen equal arcs of 12. Each arc measures one lunar day, called a tithi. The time it takes the moon to traverse a particular distance is the length of that lunar day. Ekadashi refers to the 11th tithi, or lunar day. The eleventh tithi corresponds to a precise angle and phase of the waxing and waning moon. In the bright half of the lunar month, the moon will be exactly 3/4 full on the start of Ekadashi, and in the dark half of the lunar month, the moon will be 3/4 dark on the start of Ekadashi.[8]
There are usually 24 Ekadashis in a calendar year. Occasionally, there are two extra Ekadashis that happen in a Hindu leap year.[9] Each Ekadashi day is purported to have particular benefits that are attained by the performance of specific activities.[10]
The story behind Ekadashi began with Vishnu sleeping or in a meditative state. A demon, Murdanav, approached and attempted to attack Vishnu. At that time, a beautiful woman sprung forth from Vishnu's 11th sense (often called the "mind"). An infatuated Murdanav asked to marry her, to which she responded that she would agree only if he defeated her in battle. As they fought, Murdanav was eventually killed. Vishnu awoke from his sleep, and blessed the woman by naming her "Ekadashi", and stated that if anyone were to fast on this day, they would attain moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).[citation needed]
Last November, my foi Manju aunty invited us to her place just for a change of atmosphere. We all were going through a difficult time after the loss of my mum. Fortunately for me we decided to visit her on Ekadashi day.Unfortunate for my sister in law Heni, as she had to make dishes with potatoes and more potatoes. On Ekadashi fasting which comes every 15 days, one is not allowed to consume grains and pulses and any vegetable that falls under the pulses category like peas, beans, brinjals etc. There are not many options left except for potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, yam etc.
We were suppose to have lunch at her place. There are not many options to make an ekadashi meal as everything is just full of carbohydrates. However, innovative Heni did come up with some very yummy theplas along with the usual ekadashi fare. They were not greasy at all, very soft and tasted delicious. If any of you have made rajgira puri you know what I am talking about. The theplas were made from farari or ekadashi atta which is readily available in the Indian stores in the western countries and in India. But, not all parts of India as not everyone does Ekadashi. We enjoyed the theplas with some potato curry.
During my visit to India I mentioned to my mother in law Nunu about the farari theplas. Nunu made sure I came back to Mombasa with enough of the farari flour. Heni, thanks for teaching me how to make the theplas. I have made a slight variation and of course actually measured out all the ingredients for the rest of the Patel clan and their friends. Most Ekadashi flours are made by mixing rajgira flour(amaranth), sama flour (moriyo, barnyard millet, varai, bhangar), sabudana flour (sago, tapioca). Some add buckwheat too. So this flour is gluten free.
I want to know the timing I should fast. What is tithi and parana time meaning? It would be helpful if someone gave me their ekadashi routine with timings involved and with tithi parana and dwadashi. Thank you.
I would like to know that this year 2024, we have Vaishnava Vijaya Ekadashi on 7th March 2024 and Maha Shivaratri on 8th March 2024. How can we observe both fasting simultaneously on 8th March 2024 we need to do the paran of Vijaya Ekadashi

Does any one know whether we can chant sharira avidya jal on ekadashi day? I am not seeking an answer based on your personal opinion (please forgive me) but based on the policy and practices within and among the ISKCON devotees.
sarira avidya-jal, jodendriya tahe kal,

O Lord, this material body is a place of ignorance, and the senses are a network of paths leading to death. Somehow, we have fallen into this ocean of material sense enjoyment, and of all the senses the tongue is most voracious and uncontrollable. It is very difficult to conquer the tongue in this world.
They say that it is not right to chant the other 2 verses (written by Bhaktivinode Thakur), because the 2nd verse says "sva-prasad-anna dilo bhai", and "anna" means "grain" and there is no grain in Ekadasi prasadam... So in our temple whenever devotees are honoring prasadam together on Ekadasi day, they do not chant those 2 verses. But I do not know any official statement about this, a GBC law or anything like that, maybe some devotees know... Because that first verse of Bhaktivinode Thakura's prayer that you have quoted above does not say anything about grain, so I think it is completely fine to chant it... What do devotees in India chant on Ekadasi?
Ekadashi follows the Hindu calendar on the movement of the moon. a month has 30 days and are divided into two periods of 15 days. First period of the month is called Sud (Sukla pax). During this period, the Moon's size is increasing. The second period of the month is called Vad ( Krishan pax). During this period, the moon's size is decreasing.
Ekadashi occurs on the 11th day of each period (twice a month). Ekadashi mean 11 (Ek meaning 1 and dash meaning 10 therefore 11). It is tradition in Hindu religion to observe fast on this day and is considered a holy day.
Ekadashi is a Vrat (austerity) which started many years ago. Once Lord Narayan was resting and a demon call Mundanav challenged the Lord for a fight. Mundanav had a boon (wish) that he could not be defeated by a man. So Lord Narayan produced a damsel from eleven spiritual parts of his body. Mundanav was so attracted to this damsel that he asked her to marry her. The damsel agreed with a condition that he had to fight her and destroy her and only then will she marry him. Mundanav was blinded by passion and did not even think twice and agreed to fight with her.
Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains in the Vachnamrut that a true Ekadashi Vrat is when one withdraws the ten indriyas (5 sense organs: eyes, ears, nose, skin, tongue and 5 motor organs: hands, feet, mouth, reproductive and excretory organs) and the eleventh, the mind, from their worldly activities and focuses them on God and devotional activities.
Items which can be eaten Ekadashi under farrari foods include: Potatoes, Sweet Potato, Cassava (Mogo), Turnip and Yams, Milk Yogurt, Fruits, Nuts, some vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower tomatoes) and special grain such as Samo and Rajagri. Please Note that on Ekadashi, No outside food must be consumed! Only food prepared at home or temple must be consumed!
On the day of Parivartni Ekadashi, Bhagwan continues to rest for the period of monsoon in the middle of the ocean on the head of Shesh Narayan until Kartik Sud Prabodhini Ekadashi. This day carries great importance for those who observe their Vrat accordingly, as it is a day to wash away one's sins. 'Parivartini' means 'of change' and represents the time when Shesh-Shayi Narayan...
It states in Padma Puran that keeping the vratt of Jaya Ekadashi earns immense benediction for anyone. The rewards include the fulfilment of desires, destruction of great sins and ultimately, help one to progress on the path of salvation. Great rewards and benefits, even greater than performing various donations, yagnas and visits to various pilgrimages (tirthyatra) are earnt by those who observe the vratt with full faith and vigour on this day.
