HAT'S OFF!

Louis Canelakes, operator of Louie's bar passed away Sunday after a short illness. He was 58. "D Magazine" labeled Louis "The Prince of Pour." Growing up an hour's drive north of Chicago, he never wavered in his loyalty to Chicago's teams -- though he wasn't shy about his frustation with the often hapless Cubs. Hanging out at Louie's was like taking graduate level courses in political science, literature and philosophy.

The future of Louie's remains unchanged for now. Louie's brother Chris went in to work early Monday afternoon to start cooking as usual.

DALLAS RANKING:

From Culture Map Dallas - Dallas scores big among best cities for rabid sports fans by Jonathan Rienstra.

As proof that sports dominate some people’s lives, a new study found that Dallas is the fourth-best city for sports fans. What’s more, a quarter of people would be willing to spend more on rent if it put them closer to their favorite team’s arena.

In a survey by Rent.com, 25 percent of fans said more rent would be worth being within 30 minutes of their favorite team’s home court, while 12 percent said that proximity to sports arenas was more important than being close to work.

Dallas came in fourth behind New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles for best sports city based on number of teams, championships and team values.

Dallas earned a high ranking thanks to having NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS teams as well as the Cowboys’ obscene value. The team, which is the third most valuable franchise in the world, brings in more than $600 million in ticket revenue and is valued at $2.3 billion.

Rent.com also showed the average rent of a two-bedroom apartment for each of the top 10 cities, and Dallas came in lowest at $1,383. Conversely, New York City had the highest rent at $5,460, because New York City is actually a long con to take all of your money.

So although Dallas is fourth for sports fans, it’s actually cheaper to rent three apartments around town near stadiums than it is to find one apartment in New York. That’s nearly as crazy as wanting to pay more to live closer to your favorite team.

THE DALLAS SEEN:

Last week many of Dallas’ most prominent were spotted on and off the Avenue!  Here are just a few of those sightings!

Last Saturday the place to be for famous sightings was at American Airlines Center as the Stars hosted the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks! It was a great game! Before the game my brother and I met up with two great Chicagoans - “Polish” Al and Jill in the Old No. 7 Club! During the game my brother and I waved at Chicago native and my favorite author – Marcus Blake and many of his crew!  Karen O’Brien was there, as well as Kelly Counts! Laura Mawhinney was also at the game! Of course, what would a Hawks vs. Stars games be without Chicago native Ray Hostetler and his wife Nicole!  But the most dramatic sighting was Chicago native Pete Krogulski carrying proudly the flag of the great city of Chicago!
