Dear NJFDC Community,

This fall’s unprecedented SNAP disruption affecting more than 800,000 New Jerseyans was a wake-up call. It showed us just how essential SNAP is, not only for families, but for farmers, small grocers, food hubs, and local economies across the state.

The quick response from state agencies and philanthropic partners helped stabilize immediate needs, but the lesson is clear: we must strengthen New Jersey’s full, diverse food security infrastructure not just in crisis, but every day.

In my recent article, SNAP Disruption Underscores Need to Strengthen New Jersey’s Full, Diverse Food Security Infrastructure, I reflect on what this moment revealed about our food system, and what it will take to build resilience rooted in dignity, equity, and local power.

We’re relieved that the shutdown has ended and that Congress has passed the FY26 Agriculture Appropriations Bill along with another year-long extension of the previous Farm Bill—now the third extension.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to advocating for a Farm Bill that includes robust SNAP funding, stronger local food infrastructure, and meaningful cross-sector collaboration so that every New Jersey community can access healthy, local food, no matter the circumstances.

Thank you to all of those who contribute to NJFDC and help make this work possible. If you’re interested in supporting us via a one time or recurring donation, learn more here.

With gratitude,

Jeanine Cava
NJFDC Executive Director, Co-Founder

Farm Bill Extension

What it is: Congress has released a one-year extension of the Farm Bill, packaged with the FY2026 agriculture appropriations bill.

What it means: While funding is maintained for some key programs, the bill cuts nearly $100 million from conservation technical assistance and fails to renew important conservation incentives. These choices risk weakening climate resilience, disadvantaging family farmers, and slowing progress toward a more sustainable and equitable food system.

Take action: Learn more here, then contact your Members of Congress to urge them to protect conservation funding and prioritize climate-smart agriculture, fair market access, and support for small and mid-sized farmers in the full 2026 Farm Bill.

Lame Duck Session Legislative Priorities for the Food System:

Pitch in to get these bills passed! New Jersey’s Lame Duck session — the brief post-election window when lawmakers push to pass pending legislation — is here, and several critical food system bills are on the line.

These proposals would help schools buy more local food, support farmers with value-added and beginning-farmer loan programs, protect public health, expand access to urban farmland, and strengthen NJ’s aquaculture sector.

What it is: Local Food in Schools (A3742 / S1637)
What it means: Creates a Farm to School Local Food Procurement Grant Program to reimburse districts for sourcing local food.

What it is: Urban Agriculture & Land Access (A5627 / S4350)

What it means: Updates CBT allocations and authorizes the Garden State Preservation Trust and local governments to acquire land in urban areas for agriculture.

What it is: Value-Added Agriculture (S1879)

What it means: Requires NJEDA to create a Value-Added Agriculture Loan Program to help farmers develop new products and revenue streams.

What it is: Safer, Healthier Foods (A4132 / S3016)

What it means: Prohibits the sale, distribution, and manufacturing of certain harmful food additives in commercial food products.

What it is: Beginning Farmer Support (A4229 / S1881)

What it means: Directs NJEDA to establish a loan program for beginning farmers to finance critical capital purchases.

What it is: Strengthening NJ Aquaculture (A3034 / S216)

What it means: Directs the Department of Agriculture to advertise and promote NJ aquaculture products through the Jersey Fresh Program.

Your voice matters, especially in this critical lame duck time period.

Action Guides

NJFDC has created two new action guides to help advocates, organizers, and community leaders engage directly with decision-makers and drive meaningful food system change in New Jersey.

📘 Making Your Voice Heard: Shaping Our food System Through Direct Advocacy

A practical guide to help you influence food and farm policy by meeting or calling your elected officials and taking strategic, direct advocacy action.

📗 In-District Meetings: A Step-By-Step Guide

This guide walks you through how to set up and lead effective meetings with your legislators including planning tips, talking points, and follow-up strategies.

NJ District Agriculture Factsheets

We’re sharing new district-level agriculture factsheets for NJ-02 and NJ-07, created with our partners at NSAC.

We began with NJ-02 and NJ-07 because they are both Republican-held districts with significant agricultural activity, making them key priorities for building bipartisan support on food and farm policy and demonstrating how federal programs directly impact local farmers, markets, and rural economies.

These snapshots highlight key farm statistics, conservation funding, and the economic impact of federal programs, including the millions in local food investments New Jersey lost when key programs were cancelled. These resources are designed to support your advocacy with clear, district-specific data.
