Did you know that New Jersey public schools may be closed against community wishes?
For example, in Newark, the State-appointed Superintendent is executing a plan to forcibly close a number of public schools.
Other public schools are being turned over to privately-managed charter schools, forcing students to travel across town to attend a public school.
Communities have no voice in these decisions, and that is wrong.
This Thursday, May 22, the New Jersey Assembly is voting on the Stop Forced Public School Closings legislation, which would require a local school board vote before a public school may be closed or privatized, including in state-controlled districts.
The bill already has been approved by the New Jersey State Senate. If it passes the New Jersey Assembly, this legislation will go to Governor Christie's desk for a signature.
Please take 20 seconds to do two things
1) Send an email to your Assembly members, asking them to support this legislation
2) Sign this petition in support of the legislation, which will be delivered to Governor Christie after the bill is approved by the full NJ Legislature. More than 4,000 of you have signed so far. Please help us get to 5,000!
We believe that public schools belong to the people and should never be closed by force. If you agree, please take action!
