gardens created over dead wood.  a little labor intensive at first, and there is an awful lot of downed wood after the hurricane....

ps i am familiar with the kind of land (pacific northwest) where this video was shot.
they kind of have a rainy season, that begins in october.
the land is varied, forests and meadows.
the forests are lush and damp and the meadows are generally dry, and there is almost no distance between forest and meadow.
on the downed trees in the forest there are growing landscapes of mosses, lichens, and ferns.
i think this garden environment can be replicated on the lot in newark.

ps there is a link to this site: http://www.permies.com/
with some very interesting discussions on permaculture.
it occurs to me that the garden does not have to look beautiful and orderly to be the most productive.

for example,
"I often just put old windows over a few bales to make a mini-greenhouse to get plants started off.
The straw rots down just in time to be used for mulch around the plants."

I made a hugelculture bed when I was gardening in the permaculture garden in New Brunswick. It is great fun to make. Making it really makes one aware of the uses of "throw away" things, like brush - as well as logs as Monica points out. and dead leaves. Almost any organic material that has been laying about for a while is good material.

If you want to use it immediately, and not wait a long time for everything to breakdown, you might have to add nitrogen - a good source of which is urine.  boy, talk about feeling connected to the earth!

Awesome info! :-) We should definitely put this to the test and see how it works in a more urban environment. :-) Definitely count me in! :-)

What I want to do is possibly attempt to start a little mountain of hugelkultur with the vacant lot in Garside Street, if we can meet in Dec and discuss how that can be done that would be greAt!

Good morning Marieliz,

I was looking at that article on hugelkultur and it does seem worth exploring. Did you see the new flyer Tobias sent out about visiting the Food Forum in New Brunswick to hear Nic Esposito it is on Saturday 12/8 at 9am -12:30pm. I was wondering if you were going and if so can I ride with you? I can contribute a few dollars to gas.

I will be going to this. So as always, if my Newark cousins want a ride from the train station to the event - no problem.

Separating my needs from my wants: I need a ride from the New Brunswick train station and I want a window seat :-)

Hi all,
It appears that some people may come by train and others may drive to the food event on Sat, Dec. 8th -

just so I don't leave anyone stranded at the station :)
anyone who will want a ride by me from the train to the event, please e-mail me off list - rashe...@yahoo.com, so I am sure to see the post,
and we will arrange.

thanks.
