HELLO TO YOU ALL!!!!!As we are moving into our cooler/colder months others and I
are using this time to really get The People's Garden prepared for next
Spring. I'm very excited to announce that Dina's mother and aunt, who
grew up in the countryside of Portugal, have joined The People's Garden and are lending their green thumbs.
We are currently installing our plastic bottle walls for the
greenhouse. This is definitely a process. Thanks to Sara Hambleton we
have 2 power drills to help speed this process up. We have all the materials, but still need someone to help with installing the rain gutter for the greenhouse. We'll definitely get there at some point.
Material Donations Needed
We can use more soil so if you have enriched composted soil to spare
please let me know. Keep in mind that we have a total of 6 raised beds
and 3 of them aren't filled so the more enriched soil the better. Mary
Larsen is helping and teaching me how to establish and maintain a worm farm so that we can produce our own healthy soil. I'm looking forward to that experience. :-)
Also, if you have flowers that can still be planted in the ground
we'd love to give them a home at The People's Garden. We could also use
some cool weather produce for our raised beds and, of course, if you
have seeds to share we'd greatly appreciate that as well.
Overall, the garden is becoming more and more organized. Resident
Edwin is very committed with trimming unwanted weed, but also leaving
enough wild flowers for our butterflies and bees who are still with us.

Moving ForwardSAS
will begin organizing with others in the community to have bike racks
installed at public places throughout Newark such as post offices,
public libraries, public schools, the community college, and any other places
we can have them. We're also seeking ways to have recycle bins like the
one attached placed throughout the city to help educate residents on
how to properly recycle. Of course, we'll keep you updated but if you'd
like to join us on this please let me know.
Giving ThanksI want to thank gardener Cass for allowing me and the seniors that I work with to pick produce and spend time with her at the Genesis Clinton Hill II Apartments' rooftop garden and greenhouse. To feed a person is a blessing!
I also want to thank urban farmer Carla Green for allowing me, Dina and my son Najee to be a part of the creation of their hoop house. That was an awesome experience!
And thanks again to the Greater Newark Conservancy for acknowledging me with an Exemplary Service Recognition certificate. That was a pleasant surprise that I'm still talking about 3 days later. :-)
Let's continue moving onward and upward.....
