Hello!
Attached are the flyers (English & Spanish) for this Saturday's meeting to get the local community involved in our garden! Thanks to Maya (right?) for getting designing the flyer!  I will drop it out off at La Casa de Don Pedro today and if its not raining, will do some flyering today at 5pm.  Would anyone be available to help flyer today?  I can pick anyone up at the train station or in Newark somewhere.
I think its really important that everyone that can make this Saturday's meeting be there, we want to show the community that we are a group of organized folks as much as that is possible :)   I will email around a proposed agenda and tasks (sign-in sheet, refreshments, etc..) for the meeting Saturday, if folks have specific topics that should be covered, please lemme know.
The meeting is for 1pm in the lot and if it rains, we have a rain date of Sunday the 20th at 4pm.  Who thinks they can make the meetings?  I think we might be lucky and have a sunny day Saturday!   Also, I saw in  the notes that someone said something about trying to set up one raised bed this weekend, is that a plan or just a wish?
Thanks!
Yarrow

Hey Yarrow,
I think the english version is corrupted or saved under wrong file format.  Can you resend?

I think we should try to install as many beds possible, we just need to coordinate with GNC (can someone volunteer as GNC point person?) to get them and find out who/how can bring the beds and the soil to the site.  I have a little hatch back so I can help with some hauling.

Mary said she had permeable landscape fabric to go under the beds.  Mary, do you know how many feet you have?  I can pick up extra as needed.

I've seed stared 2 types of heirloom tomatoes, organic canteloupe and small bush cucumber.  May or may not be ready for planting this weeken.  I also have a lot of white clover seed that we can spread around the lot as a ground cover.  I also have galvanized nails and twine if we want to set up square foot garden.

Need people to bring any tools they have.

I'll use this flyer to reach out to garden centers, will let you know results.

I propose for the agenda that we recruit a handfull of people from the neighborhood for daily watering and maintenance.  Really need to nail down this water source thing.

Can anyone else think of things we need to bring/aquire for this weekend?

Thanks!
Beth

Thanks Yarrow, especially for the Spanish translation. It was Monica who actually initiated the flyer. I'll be available to help distribute flyers. Just give me a call - 646.399.0337

Damian Decaires will be there providing electrical power through solar technology and is will to speak about incorporating solar technology into our garden. Beth should definitely speak about the layout design of the garden.

Setting up one raised bed is definitely a plan, but I will see if we could have about 4 by Saturday. I'll be passing a collection plate around LOL I'm working on getting the needed tools (rakes, shovels, garbage bags, etc.) and rounding up a few people to help further clean out the lot. So as Beth stated, if anyone has any tools we could borrow please speak up.

In addition to the raised bed, I'm also working on seeing what's needed to build some sort of platform for the rain barrels. If anyone have any suggestions on this please call or email me at tobia...@gmail.com or alinkag...@gmail.com

Hey Beth, I saved the flyers as PDFs. I'll email them to you. They seem to be better in pdf format. I will give Dan Daniels at GNC a call regarding 4x4 raised beds, soil, and delivery. Beth you should give Mary a call on her cell. I'll text you her number. Please keep in mind that we have to have poles attached to the raised beds and garden fabric for various reasons.

Hi all,
I'm sorry I cannot come up until the 26th, but I'll definitely be
there then, and ready to work!
I'll have a couple of lavendar, and marigold - should be ready for
planting.

I'm also concerned about the water. When new sprouts are planted they
need to be watered practically every day (at the least every other
day) if it doesn't rain, until they are established - a week or so.

Is there anyone going to be available to do that?

I'll also bring an extra watering can, and I have an extra trowel and
a small digging tool to donate. and i'll bring the compost.
and I have a plastic garbage can (the kind used to put garbage on the
street).
Any use for that? If so, I'm happy to give it. I used it to hold water
on my garden plot, but have no need of it.

also - re a structure for the rain barrels - Tobias, I'm not sure
exactly what kind of frame you want to make - but have you considered
wooden pallets?

In the gardens here we use them for the bottom of compost piles (lets
the air through)
and they have many handy uses. We got a whole bunch from craig's list
free. Often companies give them away.

Ellen this all sounds good to me. I'll try to answer your questions. Yes, I believe we could utilize the plastic garbage can. As for water plants, we hope to get residents also involved with maintaining the garden. However, members of this group can also work out a schedule for this. I'm sure this will change and we will develop a system in time. As for the rain barrels, it was suggested that we have them elevated, especially since they may have a hose connected for water plants. I'm just going with the flow on this. Someone else stated the we could either have them on the ground or use  cylinder  blocks and plywood to elevate the rain barrels off the ground.

We need to setup the priority list Google doc so I don't get lost and confuse myself :-)  I'll speak to Dina about this since she stated she would help organize this. I'm really more concerned with getting needed tools and a few people to help clear out the lot even more, so that we can place down some landscaping covering. Mulch/wood chips is expected to be delivered to the lot at some point this week.

I forgot, GNC offers a rain barrel workshop on June 9th. Free for Newark residents. I suggest some of you get a summer home in Newark. :-)
