"This is a pivotal moment in Newark. The eyes of the state and the country are on us and we must highlight the groundbreaking work that's transforming lives and communities," explained Kimberlee Williams, TEDxBroadStreet executive producer and CEO of FEMWORKSLLC.com. "Through TEDxBroadStreet, Newark will change the outward facing perception of this city, positioning it as an epicenter of thought leadership, innovation, and best practices for urban cities throughout the nation."
TEDxBroadStreet has arranged free viewing locations at Newark neighborhood centers where the conference will be streamed live via the internet. Confirmed locations include Bethany Baptist Church, Unified Vailsburg Services Org, Urban League, Center Stage Cuts, and Newark Bridges High School. TEDx viewing parties are free of charge to all attendees. They are open public spaces for community members to gather and watch TEDxBroadStreet live with others who share your passion for social change. Our goal is to have a viewing party in every ward in Newark, surrounding cities, and around the world. More locations are added daily to our website.
TEDxBroadstreet planning team, a volunteer based group of Newark residents and influencers, released the list of 25 presenters who will be part of the inaugural TEDxBroadStreet event. Among the list of notables are Ron Beit, the visionary developer behind Newark's Teachers Village project, Vincent Vittorio and Nathaniel Thomas McGill, producers of acclaimed manufacturing documentary American Made, Darnell L. Moore, LGBTQ Youth advocate and co-creator of YOU Belong, the first-ever sports camp for LGBTQ youth, and Marilyn "Penny" Joseph, Vice President, Community Relations and Corporate Outreach Programs, Panasonic Corporation of North America.
"When the community planning team were identifying people to participate in this project we were deliberate in choosing folks who were not only impacting lives, business, and communities locally," said Williams. "We chose people whose ideas and projects really serve as a best practice model for the nation."
Speakers will present in one of seven topic areas that were developed by local Newark community members during a series of community round-table discussions. The topic areas include: Community Healing, Healthy Food Access, Sustainable Neighborhoods, Women in Leadership, Economic Inclusion and Buy Local, The Newark Brand, and Youth Empowerment. About TED and TEDx
TED is an annual event where the world's leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. "TED" stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design - three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it "the ultimate brain spa" and "a four-day journey into the future." In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program, independent from TED, of local, self organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. For more information, visit: www.tedxbroadstreet.com.
