As an effort to increase our collaborative partnerships with local institutions, residents, urban agriculturalists, and other key local food stakeholders, we of the Newark Community Food System (NCFS) are hosting a Dead of Winter Farmers’ Bash in collaboration with Urban Agriculture Cooperative (UAC) and Whole Cities Foundation (WCF). This Urban Farmers’ 2019 Winter Kickoff Party will take place on Friday, February 8, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Hahne’s Building Atrium, 50 Halsey Street, Newark, NJ 07102.

This free public event holds the promise of achieving the following goals:
  • Connect Newarkers working in urban agriculture, healthy food access, and nutrition education;
  • Increase awareness of the Newark Community Food System’s work;
  • As NCFS enters its second year, we are looking for new voices invested in the conversation
  • around urban agriculture, food access, and nutrition education.
  • Increase awareness of Whole Cities Foundation’s grants and upcoming Let’s Talk Food classes.
During this celebration we will also highlight through a series of photography, video, and digital presentation the following:
  • Newark Food System Policy Council;
  • Community Markets (Farmers’ Markets, Farm to Table Co-op, Food Pantries, Healthy Corner Store Initiative);
  • Rutgers University Partnership(s);
  • Community Composting Pilot Program.
This will expand our reach throughout the Greater Newark community as we work collectively to support the growth of and advocate for the strengthening of the local food system; amplify community-led initiatives and cultivate collaborations; and advance the long-term sustainability of urban agriculture and fresh healthy food access policy.

Newark Science and Sustainability, Inc. (Newark SAS) serves as Facilitator and Coordinator of the Newark Community Food System, a new non-partisan collective of deeply engaged community leaders, in partnership with Whole Cities Foundation, a nonprofit established by Whole Foods Market. NCFS aims to support and develop sustainability efforts in urban agriculture, as well as wellness and nutrition programs. Improving the local food system will be accomplished by tackling social determinants of health and using community driven problem solving in a fiercely collaborative way.
