Newark SAS is in support of a 100% Smokefree Parks and Recreational Areas Ordinance and we hope you will join us in creating a healthier Newark, a more sustainable Newark. And, of course, it doesn't start or stop here in Newark. Let's spread this movement to surrounding communities.

And you get a really cool, free metal sign to post at your garden/urban farm. I have six to post up at our two community garden sites. Please share with others. Don't keep this gospel all to yourself!

As the attached letter states.....

"We hope to be able to count on your support in our efforts to educate the City Council and Newark community on the benefits of a 100% smokefree parks policy by providing a letter of support or replying to this email and stating you support this effort.

"The Essex County Integrated Municipal Advisory Council (Essex County IMAC) has engaged with members of the Newark community, including the Great Newark Conservatory and the Newark Environmental Commission, to establish 100% smokefree parks and recreational areas for Newark. Following a meeting on January 8, the Newark Environmental Commission has stated they would be writing a letter to submit to the City Council supporting this ordinance. Your support would show that important community organizations are amendable to this policy to improve the lives of the residents of Newark.

"The children of Newark suffer from a higher rate of asthma than others in New Jersey. The implementation of a 100% smokefree policy will improve the health of children in Newark while protecting the parks from litter such as cigarette butts. Furthermore, A 100% smokefree parks and recreational areas ordinance also sends a clear message to the city’s youth: Newark policymakers and community leaders want to promote a healthy example for children that reduces the likelihood they will start smoking."

Read the attached pdf file to learn more about this movement and the eight (8) other municipalities that have 100% smokefree parks and recreational areas ordinances.

"If you are interested in helping in our efforts or need resources for those interested in quitting smoking, please contact IMAC member Karen Blumenfeld, Esq., of GASP at karen.bl...@verizon.net or (908) 377-3900."
