Newark Science and Sustainability Projects

Peace and blessings,
Newark Science and Sustainability [SAS]: Taking the approach of social entrepreneurship, SAS is a multicultural working group based in Newark, New Jersey exploring the utilization of free, abundant, renewable energy through educational programs and hands-on training. We also promote and assist with the cultivation of urban farms. Our purpose is to ensure that every individual is given unlimited opportunity to grow, and encourage self-sustainable communities by creating businesses that contribute to local self-sufficiency and ownership.
Also, independent of the current public school system, Alinkage Public School [APS], a New Jersey nonprofit organization, is currently a school system in theory and being developed by myself, along with educator and visual artist Dina Rodrigues. APS is put into practice through SAS.
As we move forward into spring 2013, I want to inform you of the various projects that we are working on. Maybe, just maybe, you or someone you know would like to join us, especially youth and/or young adults:
- Developing a Horticulture Program geared towards youth for the Weequahic Park Association and Weequahic Park Sports Authority in Newark, NJ.
- Partnering up with urban farmers Carla Green and Fatah "Frank" Ibrahim in Newark and have combined our 2 gardens. Together, we will host outdoor educational programs and will possibly provide produce for at least 2 local store owners including local residents.
- Assisting Alex Marcoulides, Life Science teacher at the Greater Newark Charter School (grades 6-8), with the cultivation of their garden, tree planting, and possibly facilitate sustainable science projects for the youth there.
- Assist La Casa de Don Pedro, a social service organization in Newark, with the creation of community gardens at their sites.
- Continue to collaborate with Rebecca Kalenak of Essex County 4-H on various urban farming projects, including the Irvington Gardening Coalition.
- Organizing the Sustainable Living Empowerment and Enrichment Conference to be held on June 15, 2013 at Rutgers Newark in collaboration with the Newark Community Garden Coalition [NCGC], Essex County 4-H, and Greater Newark Conservancy.
- Continue supporting and being a part of the Newark Community Garden Coalition.
- Working with the Seniors on the Move, a community group made up of senior residents in Newark, with the cultivation of their garden.
- Developing an apprenticeship / internship program under the direction of mason and carpenter Fatah "Frank" Ibrahim where young adults and youth will receive hands-on learning of ecological construction.
- We've also partnered up with LongHair Entertainment and i Create TV to develop a series of video/film projects related to urban farming and sustainable science.
