Position Description
The Trees Count Peer Leader (paid) is primarily responsible for supervising students hired through the Summer Youth Employment Program and hosted by partnering community organizations to support the Trees Count project. The peer leader is responsible for managing and monitoring students while completing the tree inventory in a group setting. The Peer Leader will also assist in logistic support for the Trees Count project. An ideal candidate is proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. The Peer Leader will be expected to work primarily outdoors with the students at a variety of sites throughout the City in the first half of the summer. The second half of the summer will involve more data management and analysis. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of the Vailsburg neighborhood, and can successfully lead students through this neighborhood. Newark residents are preferred.
This position is part-time, five-hour days Monday through Thursday, for the six-week period of July 9th through August 17th. The Peer Mentor works a minimum 20 hours a week, with opportunities to work more on other projects. The hours for this position are 8am to 1pm. The Peer Mentor reports directly to Sustainability Project Coordinator Gunnar Wainwright in the Office of Sustainability. The peer mentor also reports to the Office of Sustainability at Newark City Hall (920 Broad Street Room B-12) and/or the Unified Vailsburg Service Organization (12 Richelieu Terrace Newark, NJ 07106). The first three weeks of the summer will be mostly inventorying neighborhoods in Newark. The last three weeks of the Summer Youth Employment Program will mix outside inventorying and data management and analysis. The peer mentor should also be available for the two weeks after the Summer Youth Employment Program ends for any follow up from the Office of Sustainability. This includes data analysis of the data collected in the peer mentor’s specific neighborhood after the Trees Count project ends.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Manage a group of 6 Summer Youth Employment Program students participating in the trees Count project.
· Assist students on a need-basis in carrying out the Trees Count project in their block section, including data gathering.
· Monitor students for compliance with the Summer Youth Employment Program rules and code of conduct.
· Draft weekly block section progress-reports for the Office of Sustainability.
. Write final recommendations for future tree inventories and similar projects at the end of the summer session.
