After immersing myself into the culture I became inspired to develop Acción Glocal, a nonprofit that now serves as an expansion of Newark SAS.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally

Glocally Grown in Constanza
It was in December 2018, when I took a two-week vacation to the Dominican Republic (DR) and became exposed to a town known as the agricultural capital of the nation, Constanza. I immersed myself into the culture and became inspired to develop Acción Glocal, a nonprofit organization that now serves as an expansion of Newark Science and Sustainability, Inc (Newark SAS). I used $5,000 of my own money and a $5,000 grant from Newark SAS to lay the foundation of this work. Now, I need your support.

The Need
We still need $4,300 to reach the $5,000 needed to complete our garden project in Constanza. We need to purchase soil, hay, garden tools, paint, and additional supplies. A $20 donation could bring us very close to this goal. Schedule a trip to the DR and join us in August, November, and/or December to witness the work we're doing there and meet the amazing people we're doing it with.

The Mission
The primary focus of
Acción Glocal is to utilize collaborative partnerships to address some of the pressing environmental, health, and economic challenges residents are faced with by focusing on the following components:

  • Environmental & Nutrition Education
  • Organic Agriculture and Entrepreneurship
  • Sustainable Living Practices

Follow on Instagram @glocalaccion / Like on Facebook @glocaldr

With the highly industrialization of agriculture, which promotes the widespread use of herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals that are detrimental to the environment and our health it’s important to reintroduce organic farming practices when and wherever we can. This ensures that residents have more access to fresh locally grown produce.
It was an amazing site watching people, mostly women, of all generations working together to create a community garden free of harmful chemicals in Constanza, Dominican Republic. Please help us raise $5,000 to complete this community project. Click Glocally Grown in Constanza to make a donation today.

Why the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic’s economy is highly dependent upon the United States, the destination for approximately half of exports and the source of 40% of imports. However, due to income inequality, high unemployment, and underemployment remains important long-term challenges.

As of 2015, there were approximately 1.87 million people of Dominican descent in the U.S., including both native and foreign-born. Dominican Americans are the fifth-largest Hispanic or Latino American group in the United States, after Mexican Americans, Stateside Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Salvadoran Americans. In New Jersey, a rapidly growing population of up to 250,000 Dominicans reside, topped by Paterson in absolute number and with Perth Amboy having the highest proportion in the U.S. And other areas of New Jersey including cities like Jersey City, Union City, and Newark, and many other areas in Passaic County and Hudson County.
